  • Remembering Yahn - gathering at Tikitapu Lake, Rotorua.

Three weeks ago, we had a gathering to remember Yahn, celebrate and honour his life, and share our sadness, and our gratitude for having known him. It was was held at Tikitapu Lake, a place that was very special to Yahn and his family, and where they had spent many happy times. Guests were a mix of people whose lives were touched by Yahn - friends, family, and those from groups he was involved with - including LARPers, and Steampunk and Sci-fi fans who came in costume. It was a cold day, but clear and beautiful.

Members of Yahn’s family hosted the event, and beautifully balanced the solemnity with lightness and humour, and that lovely down-to-earth realness that Yahn also personified. Jordan Henare (Ngāti Whātua ō Ōrakei, ō Kaipara) had been invited, at Yahn's request, to support the event with karakia, mihi and haka; which resonated so wonderfully beside the sacred lake. People from different parts of Yahn's life were given opportunities to stand and speak, sharing stories and experiences.

In keeping with Yahn's love of music, a number of people sang at the event - each with a special piece with unique significance. The gathering closed with a recording of Yahn himself singing 'Tears in Heaven' – a truly precious and poignant moment.

Afterwards people re-convened at Kuirau Park to share food and social time with each other. It was a lovely, relaxed gathering, and lovely knowing that Yahn had brought us together.

  • Cremation, obituary, gathering

      28 July 2023

    Hello all

Yahn has now been cremated in a private ceremony at Collingwood Funeral Home in Rotorua. Obituaries have been published in the New Zealand Herald and the Rotorua Daily Post (Links below).

There will be an informal gathering tomorrow, 1pm-2pm Saturday 29th, on the shores of Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) near Rotorua. It will be a chance to remember Yahn, share some words, and perhaps sing a song or two. We invite those who knew Yahn to join us. A Facebook event has been created where any last-minute updates will be posted (links below). We hope to capture some of the moment in photo and video to share with those that cannot be with us tomorrow.

We will be working with Wendy to access the GiveALittle funds to defray funeral expenses. We thank you again for your help lightening her load; it will make a big difference over the next while.

  • A farewell to our friend Yahn

      20 July 2023

Hello all, friends and family of Yahn, and kind strangers.

It is with sadness that we share the news that Yahn passed away this afternoon, Thursday 20th, at home, cared for, and in the presence of his wife, Wendy. His condition has been deteriorating since Saturday, but he was able to spend some precious moments with family and friends. The hospice workers have made themselves available night and day, and have kept him as comfortable as possible over the last five days.

Those that knew Yahn are welcome to send well-wishes. Although Wendy may not be able to respond at this time, she is grateful to you all for your support and love. Please bear in mind that Yahn was not religious and secular messages are preferred.

Yahn and Wendy are clear that they do not want a formal funeral and the cremation will be private. Yahn would love to have people that knew him get together in Rotorua to celebrate his life in an informal setting. We understand that for many this will involve travel, and we will share the date for this as soon as we are able.

We are glad Yahn was able to check off some of his bucket list. The plan is to use remaining funds to help cover end-of-life expenses and help Wendy over the next while. We appreciate your generosity and understanding in this regard, and please feel free to contact us if you have any concerns.

Sending our love and condolences to you from all of us.

A bright star to guide you and a wide horizon new, with a steady wind to sail by and a fair shore that waits for you Yahn.

  • Unexpected news

      15 July 2023

    Hi all

Unfortunately, events have quickly overtaken us, and this morning (Saturday) Yahn needed to have an Intrathecal pain pump put in as his body is beginning to shut down*. Hospice have been at the home since 7am, and the focus now is on helping keep Yahn comfortable. Hospice estimate he may have days left, or hours.

We want to thank you all for your help and well-wishes so far. We will share updates though here regarding funeral arrangements as they develop; Yahn has shared with Wendy a clear vision of what he would like to have happen and she is committed to honouring this.

We wish we had happier news to share. Thank you all for your support. We will continue to pass on any messages, and we are happy to answer any questions on behalf of the family as they arise.

Thank you to everyone who has donated to this cause, our funding goal has been reached in less than a week!

We're so grateful to all of you, blown away really. We had hopes for this fundraiser but no real idea how successful it would be.

That said, we do encourage you to keep sharing the page to encourage more donations. Yahn and Wendy have already gone out and done a few things off the list and we'd love to facilitate even more.

Checked off are rabbits minigolf with the family and the ducks tour, both of which were a lot of fun for them - I've uploaded some minigolf photos with Yahn's permission

Once again thank you all for your kind words and donations, it's truly magical to see the community come together in this way.

  • Post-weekend update

      4 July 2023

Hello all you lovely people. It has been pretty special seeing all of the pledges and comments come in; it's clear that Yahn and Wendy have meant a lot to a lot of people over the years.

I've been diligently copying any well-wishing comments from the page into a document and sending them to the couple in batched updates so that they can see all of the kind and loving things that you have shared.

As for next steps, a few friends are heading to Rotorua for the Costumiers Fantasy Masquerade Ball on the weekend of the 14th and 15th. Yahn has expressed some interest in attending, and hopefully we can support him in that. While there, they are hoping to further the plans to tackle the bucket list items.

Again, thank you for generosity, and we hope to share some updates of their adventures where we can.

    Cheers, from all of us.
