Young Leaders Projects 2010

  • Fundraising a-go-go

      18 May 2010

Hi wonderful supporters! We had our fundraising and budgeting work shop this weekend, which went really well, thanks to the hard work of the young leaders, the support of the mentors, and the expertise of VUW Foundation Director Tricia Walbridge. They all have drafts of fundraising plans now, so should be getting started shortly on raising money for their amazing plans. We had some news from a few more young leaders about their projects too? - the Zimbabwean youth want to run a 'helping project' - they're just trying to narrow down who they want to help; the Rwandan girls want to start a netball team; and the Afghan girls are working on it, but Sonia is taking a survey at the moment of what they want the most. There are a few photos from the last couple of workshops ""http://www.flickr.com/photos/48976754@N08/sets/72157623899178922/"">HERE... We've raised $475 so far (a couple of cash donations have come in), but we probably need about $1000 for it to make a difference to the Young Leaders Projects - if you know anyone who could contribute, please pass on the link! Thanks so much, Tessa and the whole crew involved in the Young Leaders Project

  • Update for 04/05/2010

      4 May 2010

Let the projects begin! This weekend we had our 'Project Planning' workshop, where most of them were able to plan out what they're going to do this year. So excited!! Why? Because... The Sudanese boys are going to do two projects - they want to find a safe space to make hip hop and other music and will be looking at creating a member-based club for African youth interested in music; they also want to get their basketball team cracking. Razeq, who is working with Afghan boys, will be creating an online network so they can all stay in touch and help each other with some issues. At this stage it will be for Wellington but maybe national once it's up and running... Esaa, who is leading the Oromo young people, wants to run an event which celebrates Oromo culture, food, music and dance Julia and Christalin, who are going to be working for Burmese youth, want to do something that brings together the whole community in unity, and celebrates the diversity of their culture. They're going to see what the others think about dance and music workshops and mother tongue classes. A few more to come from the ladies who weren't able to make it on Saturday...
