Waha is a civics education programme that helps children and young people see themselves as effective agents of change.
Manukau, Auckland
Waha imagines a future where all children and young people thrive, where their rights are respected and their voices heard. But there is work to be done - democracy is in decline, rights are under threat, and social cohesion is falling around the world.
At the heart of this civics education programme is one idea - the power of collective voice. Democracies are built around participation. Every voice matters in the task of protecting rights, promoting social cohesion, and building a future where all children and young people thrive.
Waha is designed to be engaging and uplifting for young people, and support educators to tackle civics education with greater confidence and depth. The modular programme comprises lessons and fun content, which can be used in different ways, giving teachers the flexibility to integrate Waha into any civics and citizenship programme.
Waha invites young people to see themselves as effective agents of change. It helps them see their voices as relevant; they have a right to be heard; and their actions will make a positive difference in our community.
YouthLaw is the only community law centre in Aotearoa where children and young people can access free legal services just for them. We have a free phone advice line and run law-related education sessions in schools and community groups.
Waha needs help to build relationships, train teachers, and finish making additional resources. We also want to gift 1000 of our beautiful box-set games to schools and community groups. Your support will help rangatahi make the world they want.
