Ziggy needs surgery for a liver shunt

Hi everyone and apologies for the long gap between updates - things have been rather chaotic recently and we've been waiting to hear from the team at Massey to see where things stand with Ziggy.

Unfortunately a few weeks ago Ziggy had another seizure which has, after more tests, led to the conclusion that his surgery to close the portosystemic shunt at the beginning of this year, which so many of you helped to make happen (amazing folk you are), was not successful. Today is in fact his second birthday and this is certainly not the present we had hoped he would be getting.

Basically our options now are to medically manage Ziggy for the rest of his life, however long that may be, or possibly attempt another surgery to try to close the shunt for a third time - we are devastated that this is even something we have to consider again, as many of you who have been on this journey with us since he was a puppy will understand.

Massey have suggested another option would be to take Ziggy back to surgery and use intraoperative fluoroscopy to try to find an alternate safe way to access the shunt and ligate (close) it but this is still not without some risk. Any further surgery will be more invasive than the last though which means more risk, more trauma and longer recovery for the wee bugger. And, again there would be no guarantees of success.

We need to discuss this further with our own vet to figure out where we go from here and what is best for Ziggy. In the meantime we are back to medical management which is keeping his symptoms under control - Ziggy is still a happy dog who gives us so much love and so many laughs.

Once again, we want to extend a huge thanks to you all - your support helped us get through the last few months and despite the unfortunate outcome, Ziggy is still bouncing along, blissfully unaware of the poor hand he has been dealt. We'll keep doing everything we can to make sure he can live his best life!

Hello again folks! As mentioned in the last update, Ziggy was scheduled for surgery on the 6th. Fortunately, things went smoothly and the surgical team were happy with what they were able to do. They were unable to ligate the shunting blood vessel as hoped, instead they added five metal clips to the blood vessel. The surgeons are hopeful that this will attenuate the vessel but they cannot rule out the possibility of continued shunting in future. We remain hopeful that this won't be the case however.

After the surgery, Ziggy spent 4 days in the ICU with round the clock care and monitoring to ensure he suffered no serious side effects such as seizures. He was given the all clear to be discharged this morning (Monday 10th) and as such he is now back home, albeit extremely tired and feeling pretty average to say the least. But, he is still bright and keen for interaction so as he continues to recover physically, we expect his ridiculous energy levels will begin to return soon.

It will take about 3 months to see any proper indications of whether or not the shunt is fully resolved and it may be that Ziggy will require some degree of medical management for the rest of his life as further surgery is not viable. Whatever the outcome though, we are once again extremely grateful to the team at Massey for their superb dedication to providing the best possible outcome and care for Ziggy.

We are also extremely grateful for all the support from each and every one of you, your donations have lifted a huge weight during a very stressful and uncertain time. Now that he's on the mend, we will hopefully be able to finally put this behind us so Ziggy can live his best life with happiness and fun.

Happy new year everyone! We hope you all had a safe and enjoyable new year celebration and managed to enjoy the great summer weather here in NZ!

It has been a bit of a challenge keeping Ziggy cool this last week, bobbing for biscuits in a shallow tub of water has proven a popular method however. As is chasing water from the hose of course - that one never gets old.

On a more serious note, Ziggy had his initial consultation at Massey Vets today, followed by the CT scan and Angiogram. We went in expecting that either a new single blood vessel or multiple smaller blood vessels were responsible for the renewed shunting - the latter of which would likely be inoperable.

Fortunately, the outcome so far is both the most favourable and unlikely - the original blood vessel appears to have renewed shunting. Although the vets won't be 100% certain of the extent until they begin surgery, we are hopeful that this means a complete closure of the offending blood vessel can be achieved, providing a more permanent solution for Ziggy.

The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (Jan 6th) and the soon to be very sorry looking wee chap will most likely be home again on the weekend, albeit missing a substantial portion of his fur.

Thank you all again for your support, it has been quite overwhelming and is greatly appreciated!

Merry Christmas from Ziggy and family! We hope you all have a wonderful time with friends and family and get a chance to unwind after what has been a pretty tough year for everyone.

We've all settled into the routine with meds and diet changes, although the lack of treats and chews has been a bit frustrating as the boring biscuits aren't high enough value for him to pay attention at times. There have been a couple of setbacks with some further seizures but otherwise he is happy and healthy - in so much as he can be given his condition!

Ziggy's referral to Massey has been confirmed for 5th January as both an initial consultation and, assuming that goes well, a CT scan under general anaesthetic to determine the location and extent of his liver shunt.

If the results come back favourable, he will be immediately admitted for surgery the next day. This is a much faster turn around than we had anticipated but if things line up (fingers crossed), it also means he would be fully recovered by mid-year instead of closer to the end of the year which is a big win!

Unfortunately it means his belly, which has really only just recovered its fur coat after the last surgery, will have to be shaved again so he will be quite the ridiculous looking animal again soon. A small price to pay for proper treatment though.

As a Christmas treat today, he got to visit one of his favourite places - the beach! He looked quite dashing in his Christmas bandanna.

Stay safe everyone and have a fantastic Christmas and New Year!

  • Thank You Everyone

Hello everyone, firstly a massive thank you to all who have donated to help our little guy, we have been quite overwhelmed by the support so far and it is difficult to put into words just how much it means to us.

As one of the first steps in managing his shunt, Ziggy has begun transitioning to his L/D food - specially formulated for liver conditions such as this. Its definitely not his favourite and he is not happy about losing access to his favourite treats but he puts on a brave face and eats what's provided (not much choice in the matter mind!). Additionally, he is back on his medications, which he handles like a champ with no fuss fortunately.

In positive news, Massey Vet Hospital have accepted Ziggy's referral and he has been booked in for an initial evaluation on January 5th. This will check his overall body condition, general health and suitability for surgery and determine a time line for having him stable before he undergoes a CT scan and Angiogram to identify the location and extent of the shunting blood vessel.

Although it is a bit difficult trying to keep his energy levels under control to avoid stress induced seizures, Ziggy is doing well all things considered and we now have a date to work toward for the next step in getting him back to normal.

Thank you all again for your support, it is a huge relief knowing that we have additional resources to help Ziggy moving forward and although he can't express it directly, he is a very happy and grateful little man right now.

    - Ziggy, Steve & Amanda.
