  • Three swims done - one to go!

Three swims are now complete- and the write ups of both the Catalina and Manhattan swim are below. They were both wonderful swims for different reasons and the fundraising has gone well so thank-you all so much for your generosity. Swimming around Manhattan at night was truly very special - swimming under famous bridges and seeing all the lights of the Manhattan skyline was amazing.

The next swim is the Bristol Channel so from Wales to England. The season over there hasn't been that great as there has been quite a bit of wind so we need to hope for less wind at the end of September. My tide window starts on the 23rd of September. Great news is that my mum is travelling over and planning to be on the boat as crew, so I am in good hands.

Thanks again for all the support!

  • Catalina swim is on tonight

      7 July 2023

Just a quick note to say the Catalina swim is on tonight. This will be the first swim ever with the whole family on the boat - Ivan and the 4 children. We had an exciting trip at the start when our accommodation (booked months ago) was cancelled as we landed. We found a new place and the neighbours invited us the 4th July street party and of course have a NZ friend and will all be watching the tracker! Conditions look a bit windy at the start but then will calm down. Thanks for the support so far - its been awesome. The photo is all of us at the finish with the amazing Patricio who is my kayaker and gave us all an awesome swim briefing on the beach!

  • Los Angeles - only 4 days to go to swim 2

      2 July 2023

    Hi all

As we landed in LA I got a text saying our accommodation had been overbooked so wasn't available. So we were sitting at LA airport trying to find a house for six for 9 days for that night! We found a place in Culver City LA and are settling in just fine. Been for a swim this morning at Culver City pool where I was told "there are speed limits in this state and your breaking them!" So I must be swimming well.

Recently Alexa Cook from Newshub covered the swims - https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/sport/2023/06/long-distance-swimmer-grainne-moss-heading-to-us-to-set-new-swimming-record.html

Looking forward to enjoying some 4th July celebrations, then meeting my skipper and canoeist and then swim on the 6th. Wind picks up on the 6th but looks like it drops at night when the swim is. Thanks for all the support to date.

  • Channel of Bones Completed!

      17 May 2023

I am thrilled to have finished the 42km "Channel of Bones" between the two islands of Oʻahu and Molokaʻi, in Hawaii. Famed for its Box Jellyfish, some of who I met up close and personal on the way, I finished the swim in 15 hours and 7 minutes.

We started about 6pm so most of the swim was in the dark which was a bit disorienting at first as there was quite a bit of swell and chop-funny trying to avoided being hit by a wave when you can’t see!

At 2,4 and 6 hours I got stung by Portuguese men of war however it was about 11 and a half hours in I was stung by two box jellyfish-the stings were excruciating and I could feel the poison course around my body, with my tongue swelling a little.

I really had to dig deep to stay in. “When I kept getting stung, I kept thinking of the kids who suffer grief and told myself my pain will go- theirs stays a lifetime."

The pain and poison slowed me down along with some funny currents near the end- hence the swiggly line on the tracker.

However I pushed through and landed on Sandy beach just after 9am. Some beach goers were pretty impressed when they heard where I had swum from.

Recovery is going well - the first 30 hours post were horrible due to the pain of the stings and I have had little to no sleep but this evening the pain is starting to reduce so fingers crossed for some good sleep soon.

Thanks all for the support to date. Excited about the next 3 swims!
