Running my first Marathon for Kiwi kids living with arthritis, including my incredible 9-year-old.
Auckland
When my son was 5, he was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). He’s 9 now, and over the past four years he’s had flare-ups where inflammation in his joints causes him real pain. Those times have meant treatment, including a course of three injections over a fortnight and regular blood tests. Through all of it, he’s been an absolute legend. He hasn’t let arthritis stop him from being active and getting stuck into life, and I couldn’t be prouder of him.
I'm so thankful for the care he’s received from the amazing team at Starship and his specialists. We’ve also had wonderful support from KWANZ (Kids With Arthritis New Zealand).
So, I’ve signed up for the Auckland Marathon: my first ever marathon. It’s going to take me well outside my comfort zone, and it won’t be easy. But whenever it gets tough out there, my motivation will be my son and all the other kids living with JIA.
I’m running to raise funds for KWANZ. Every dollar helps them provide:
- Care packages for kids and families
- Activities and events that bring the JIA community together, including a Christmas party for the kids (at Rainbow's End most years).
- Support resources and information for the kids, their families, teachers including a children’s book they’ve written
If you’re able to support me, I’d be hugely grateful. No donation is too small, and every bit makes a real difference to Kiwi kids like my son.
Appreciated!
Geoff
