From Kerikeri to "The Farm" campsite. 58 km.

Kerikeri is good town with plenty of shops to resupply, I had to walk 3km to get back on the TA trail again. On the way there I met a group of 6 young people walking together. They'd all met each other along the way and decided to walk together.

The TA trail reached, I was soon left on their dust, literally, as it was on a gravelly forest track that wound it's way slowly uphill. Most of the forest had been harvested so there little shade, and it was a hot day. Travelled 24km. Camped by the sea and had a good sleep.

Next day, off early with another 34km ahead of me, and a very hot day again. Another gravel road, so hard on the feet and soul, that snaked steeply up through a native forest and down the orher side. Eventually a tar-sealed road was reached, with a further 3km to reach "The Farm" my next rest stop for the night. I have about another 250km to go have journied the length of New Zealands North Island NZ. Phew 😃

  • Back on trail after recovering from injury and seeing out winter 😃

    Hi folks

Yes. Back out there again trying to raise more money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

I'm near Kaitaia, deep the Raetea Forest. Quite a slog today on Te Araroa trail. A steep, slow, steady climb with LOTS of mud and LOTS of twisted tree roots among it to navigate. Very tricky.

I turned 79 recently, and my poor old body is asking what the heck I'm doing with it 🤣

So I ignore it and carry on. Not many kilometres today though, only managed 9 km in 6 3/4 hours. That's a miserable 1.03 km/hr!!

Hopefully the track improves tomorrow and I can make some decent headway.

I'm heading for Kerikeri, some 80 km away.

The weather today has been kind, not too hot and ideal for walking.

  • End of the 90 Mile beach section

Well, that was a slog! 😄

It was hard physically and mentally to keep going for 5 days walking on hard sand. Almost like walking on a road for 100km. As a consequence one of my feet got wrecked and has forced me to stop and take a long break to fix it. As the walking season for me is coming to a close, I'll wait until the spring and get back into it again. See you then 😍

  • Days 3 and 4 of my walk on the Te Araroa trail

      21 March 2024

After a 30 km walk along the beach. I stopped for a rest day at Maunganui Bluff campsite. Two guys I'd met on the way arrived several hours after I did, around 9.30. One of them had a serious foot injury and could hardly walk. They both decided to pull the pin on their journey and were lucky to get a lift from a passing Fisheries truck

Feeling a lot refreshed, and my feet began talking t

o me agai, I headed off on a 30km jaunt along the beach again. With regular stops every hour, I reached my destination 9 hours later. Walking on hard, wet sand is very hard on the feet, and mine were burning a bit. Never mind, part of the "fun" 🤪 Found a nice campsite, with hot showers at Hukatere!! Yeah!

Today, day 4, an 18km walk to another campsite at Ngapae holiday park. Really lovely people run it and they were very generous and kind to me. Laundry done. Watered and fed. Short 14km walk to Ahipara tomorrow, the maybe couple of rest days. All for now, I'm off to bed soon. I've added a few more photographs to my gallery for you to peruse.

    Cheers, Duncan

  • My walk from Cape Reinga to Puhoi

I left Cape Reinga on Sunday afternoon and got to my first camp site at Twilight Cove 14 km away by 6.00pm. The next day I walked another 28 km to the next campsite on 90 mile beach, it was quite tough going walking on hard sand. Next day I had a rest day. Today, day 3, I've walked 30 km on 90 mile beach. It's been a hard walk, but I enjoying walking for my charity. Thank you and my very best wishes to you all. Duncan 🥰

  • Walking the Tongariro Crossing

      14 March 2024

This section was amazing. A long hard slog but totally worth it. Covid had reduced numbers doing it every day, sometimes up to thousands! There were less than a hundred when I did it, so it was really great. https://www.relive.cc/view/vWqBrMmXXYq
