A year-long search for the birds of Aotearoa/New Zealand powered by bicycle, on-foot and public transport.
Christchurch, Canterbury
In the birding world, the idea of a ‘Big Year’ is to see as many species of bird within one calendar year as possible. I’m planning my own attempt at a ‘Big Year’ but without the use of cars or planes. My ‘Big Year will be powered by pedalling, walking and using public transport. I’m hoping to cycle and walk hundreds of kilometres around Aotearoa and spot as many of the countries bird species as possible.
Forest and Bird are New Zealand’s leading independent conservation charity, advocating for and helping to protect Aotearoa’s wildlife. With climate change being one of the greatest threats that New Zealand’s wildlife faces, it seemed appropriate to try and raise money for Forest and Bird by doing a ‘Big Green Year’.
The aim is to see at least 125 species. This is lower than what you may expect from a typical ‘Big Year’, but remember this is pedal-powered and will be in my spare time around work and other commitments!
