When water is scarce or needs to be carried an excessive distance people often turn to using an unclean supply instead, with disastrous consequences. 30,000 deaths occur every week from lack of access to clean water, and 90% of those deaths are children under 5 (source: thewaterproject.org).
These statistics are upsetting, so we are choosing to take action to contribute towards the progress of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6 - Clean Water and Sanitation). We are going to be carrying water for six kilometers through Auckland CBD (according to the UN this is the average burden of women in parts of Africa and Asia) this World Water Day so that they no longer have to. By raising money for Engineers Without Borders (EWB) we are enabling them to focus on developing the technical skills of engineers already living in-country. This means that communities have access to the expertise required to design, operate and maintain an asset right through its life cycle.
The Green Team at Beca Auckland is supporting the 2019 EWBNZ Walk for Water by walking 6km around the Auckland CBD carrying 20 litres of water. We want to raise funds to support the work the Engineers Without Borders is doing in the humanitarian space. This month at Beca we are bringing attention to the Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) so this event comes at a great time for us!
