Help me raise money for brain cancer while I train to get in the ring as a tribute to Thomas’s fight.
Dunedin, Otago
My name is Joel and I am currently training for Punch with Purpose 6. PWP6 is a boxing event where a group of strong-willed people train for 10 weeks to ultimately get in the ring and throw down. As it is a charity fight, we have been tasked to raise money for a charity of our choice.
This seemed like the perfect opportunity to raise money for a cause that has been playing on the minds of myself and many people around me. On the 9th of March, myself and many others lost a friend. Two parents lost a son, a brother lost a brother, a girlfriend lost a boyfriend, and the list goes on. With that, I dedicate my fight to Thomas McNaught.
In August 2025, at 19 years old, Thomas was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer a paediatric glioblastoma. This form of tumour is very aggressive and even more difficult to treat. The average survival is 12–18 months after diagnosis. After having a craniotomy, Thomas underwent 6 weeks of chemo and radiation. The radiation treatment was 5 days a week. Sadly, this did not stop his tumour from coming back quicker than anyone could imagine.
Within 2 months, Thomas had 2 surgeries, high dose chemo, and sadly a case of pneumonia. He closed his eyes on the 9th of March, only 7 months after his initial diagnosis, at 20 years old.
