Talofa lava - For JOYRIDE 2026, I’m biking an “untested” challenge —and I need your help.
705m is the distance of the Howrah Bridge in India which links West Bengal to Kolkata. I intend to cycle 705 metres of non-car bridges in the month of November
The bridges will be all over the city - within reserves, or crossing the various rivers and streams.
I’m not sure if it will be impossible, or ridiculously easy. If I complete this very early in November I might extend the challenge. Conversely, If 705m of non-car bridges doesn’t actually exist in Christchurch, I might broaden my definition of “Christchurch”.
While I’m cycling these bridges your donations will help build bridges of wellbeing in Kolkata. Each year Joyride helps some of Kolkata's poorest communities access vital services—like healthcare, education, employment and fun!
Let's help bridge the gap!

90 minutes - Ten Bridges, 91m of Bridges - Harder than I thought. 1 November 2026
My first search started around a local lake (only one bridge), the surrounding roads, and then to the area around Nga Puna Wai Sports complex in Halswell... Nine bridges later!
Many kids in Kolkata live tough lives. Poverty and modern slavery leave little room for joy. Joyride exists to change that—creating spaces where kids can just be kids. They can play, have fun, and experience joy without the burden of being income earners or domestic help. Donations make a HUGE difference. Thanks!

In Kolkata, a lot of kids don’t get to enjoy just being kids. Poverty and modern slavery don’t leave much room for fun or joy in their lives
Thanks so much Chris. Greatly appreciated.
