The first half of the bike trip flew by and before we knew it we had arrived in Wellington!! My fundraising goal was to bike from Cape Reinga to Bluff in a month and having never done a bike trip before I wasn't sure if this was ambitious or do-able but considering we completed one island in 13 days, we seemed to be on track! After having such a good experience in the North Island I was keen to soldier on to the South Island although my partner in crime- Chris and I were on different time schedules so when we reached Wellington, we decided to make like a banana and split.

On day 18 I hopped on the ferry, bound for Picton!! I decided to ride along the East Coast of the South Island, so from Picton I biked to Blenheim, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin and Gore. On February 7th, exactly one month after departing Cape Reinga, I made it to Bluff!! To reach Bluff was super exciting as I achieved my goal of cycling from the top to the bottom of New Zealand in a month. The South Island was all smooth sailing except for two days when I was battling crazy weather- as in gale force winds and torrential rain!! But to only have two days of bad weather on the whole trip, I consider myself pretty lucky!! I had such a good experience in the South Island, well on the whole trip actually! I was absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of people who want to help out, from those who gave me a bed to sleep in, to those who donated to this fundraiser. Thank you all for making this bike trip an adventure I’ll never forget!! Stay classy New Zuulland xx

The adventure has officially begun and I'm now halfway through the journey! I left Cape Reinga on January 11th and made it to Wellington on January 23rd. The 1250 km North Island ride took me through Kataia, Opua, Mangawhai, Auckland, Ramarama, Cambridge, Taupo, National Park, Palmerston North, Upper Hutt and then Wellington. I've been so stoked with the adventure so far... beautiful sunny days, not a drop of rain, lovely people, great hospitality, awesome catch ups with family and friends, only 2 tube punctures, 1 minor car crash but no injuries, no definitive shorts tan (although a seriously horrendous singlet tan) and no sore bum!!?? I had 2 rest days at home and one "rest" day to hike Tongariro which was an absolute beaut. Thanks so much for the support so far- locally and abroad! I'll keep you updated on how the South Island goes x

  • Must Watch: New Zealand's chilling child poverty story - KidsCan 2013

      9 November 2014

In New Zealand 1 in 4 children live below the poverty line. The great tragedy is, we just don't see it.
