Participating in Joy ride. Get on your bike to support kids in India.
Canterbury
During the month of October, I'm committing to cycling and educating myself and maybe others about the benefits of cycling, to raise money for Joyya. These funds will go towards supporting young people in some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities in West Bengal.
The Education Bit
The Benefits of riding a Bike: Waka Kotahi (NZTA) estimates that the combined benefits to health and having less cars on the road due to getting on your bike is equivalent to $1.45 per km cycled.
The Costs of taking the Car: Te Tari Taake (IRD) recognises the combined fixed and running costs of driving a car is equivalent to $0.79 per kilometre.
The Helping $ Bit
I'm aiming to keep a track of the distance I cover cycling whenever I can to work, the shops, church etc over October and donate at least the equivalent total of both the benefits of riding a bike and costs avoided of not using our car. I'll do the cycling - you can help me with the fund$!
To all you donors thanks so much 2 November 2021
Well, the first Joy ride has come and gone and together we have raised over 20K.
Amazing ah.
That means because of your generous donation kids in really vulnerable communities will have festivals to go to, sports gear to share in the parks, craft gear to create with and fun events to participate in making their colourful communities a bit more fun and exciting.
So on behalf of those communities thank you. You all dug deep and made this world just a little bit better.
Well done.
John
