Helping Awhina House Tauranga support women without housing. Going without wine for 30 days.
Bay of Plenty
Like a few of us, my alcohol use did some creeping up during rahui/lockdown, and I thought Dry July would be a great self-care step. While the main cause for Dry July this year (look good feel better) is fantastic, I knew I would be more motivated if I chose something personal for me.
As part of my work for Like Minds, Like Mine we run free training workshops for people that work with people vulnerable to housing loss. Last year I was delighted to find out that Awhina House in Tauranga is not only providing housing for women in the Bay of Plenty, (where I hail from) but is being managed by the delicious Angela who I went to TV school with, what seems like a lifetime ago. I've worked for lots of NGO's and charities over the years and I know how precious untagged funds - so that's what I'm raising money for. I have a great deal of trust in Angela's decision making and motivations, and so am way more motivated to let go of my vino pleasure....

People who experience homelessness are diverse with rich and painful stories. One thing I have learnt working in mental health, is the way that culmulative stress and trauma, sometimes going back generations piles things on certain families and individuals. There but for the grace of God go I.
Could you help? Sponsor me $10 or $1 day $30 to make a local powerful difference.
Want to join me?? You could do two weeks or three if the month feels a bit much.
PS I am allowed 1 day off as part of my self set rules - this is not me cheating.
WINNNNEEEEEEE I will miss youuuuuu
This house provides support and living options for women who are homeless in Tauranga. They are meeting with aroha and dignity for all a pressing need in the community.
Does not drinking alcohol attract cat calling? The real evidence... 30 July 2020
Kia ora team. Well I'm pretty much a month without alcohol, and today I got cat called on the street. Now I'm not into guys yelling at woman, but the guy was doing a "smoking" gesture, so I THINK that's what it was. Either that or I was on fire and didn't notice. So I'm not supporting his cat calling, but I am just noticing it hasn't happened for a few years.
Perhaps there is no correlation to my being off alcohol- I cannot say! Perhaps my karma glow from this donation work drew this charmer in.
Anyways! Nearly there team - wanna donate? You tots should- read what the wonderful Angela says about Awhina House.
Awhina House is an 11-bed residence for women who are homeless in Tauranga. We create a space where women can be safe, reflect on their goals and desires and be supported in their decisions towards wellbeing and independent housing. Many of the women who come to Awhina House battle with addictions and mental health challenges rooted in past trauma. Through Sheree’s work with ‘Like Minds Like Mine’ our staff team have had the opportunity for professional development in the area of mental health.
When Sheree approached us to offer her Dry July GiveaLittle fundraiser we were super stoked. It’s a fantastic commitment to go Dry for July and we are hugely grateful to be the recipients of Sheree, Kate and Kerri’s Dry July fundraising efforts. The funds will be used to support the work we do at Awhina House and will directly benefit our women.
We hope it has been a fun month and we are so grateful to every supporter for your donations.
Angela, Awhina House General Manager
