A charity run for emergency services staff to raise crucial funds for mental health and suicide awareness.
Christchurch, Canterbury
Over a 24-hour period on 1-2 November, over 40 staff from Police, Hato Hone St John, Fire and Emergency NZ, Surf Lifesaving and NZ Defense Force will run a total of 6 runs each to raise funds for mental health and suicide awareness. Most of these people running have had to deal first hand with the fall out of mental health issues and they themselves are not immune to what they have to see and do. With the ever increasing demands that the public health system are facing, our charity, I AM HOPE, do an outstanding job with rangatahi in our community and generally have young people in front of a counsellor within 6 days!!
Our goal is to raise $20,000 by running 4 miles every 4 hours for 24 hours. Each agency will start their run on the hour, and return every 4 hours thereafter, totalling over 38km each. This will all take place along the New Brighton Pier so we're hoping it won't be a brisk easterly, stiff southerly or a hot nor' wester! Some will be running in full uniform, some with breathing apparatus or vests. Others will be happy just to get through! We want to push ourselves out of our comfort zone as we know there is light at the end of our tunnel, unlike many of the young people who we are raising funds for. Thank you for your donation.
Update #1 7 August 2025
Police team has begun organising a quiz night with some amazing prizes from the community! Now the first donations have been made.
Not sure how the other teams training is progressing but the Police's is very slow going! Less than 3 months to go. Time to work hard and get some funds in!
Nice one, cheers Ghosty.
