Fundraising for Accelerating Aotearoa Incorporated
Auckland
I've been working on a project that’s really close to my heart, giving 40 kids from Otara the chance to take part in a two-day, one-night marine education and recreation programme at the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre (MERC). Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Accelerating Auckland and have seen how impactful their work is, especially when it comes to creating experiences for young people. This programme is all about lifting the water safety capabilities of these tamariki and giving them skills they might not get elsewhere.
The programme includes activities like kayaking, raft building, and snorkeling, designed to build water confidence and teach kids how to be safe in and around the water. There’s also a focus on environmental awareness, helping them develop a sense of responsibility for the marine world. The overnight stay at MERC will let them gain independence and strengthen their relationships with peers, all while learning in a unique and supportive environment.
We’re so close to making this happen, but we still need a bit more funding to cover transport and accommodation costs. MERC has been amazing in helping get this off the ground, and with a little extra support, we can make this incredible opportunity a reality for these kids. It’s going to be a game-changer for them!
