Expedition "Wide-Eyed"

  • Final steps & Postcards!

If you're reading this then you probably donated towards the Fred Hollows Foundation. I'd like to personally show my appreciation by sending you a Shikoku postcard, which I will produce myself from photos I took during the pilgrimage. If you'd like to receive one please email me at freefallmode@gmail.com with your name and address.

For most pilgrims the last step of the 88 temple pilgrimage is to climb Mt Koya on the main island of Japan and visit the monasteries founded by Kobo Daishi, the monk in whose footsteps the pilgrimage traces.

My companion Nagisa joined me for the final walk, 6 hours hiking up Mt Koya, and we arrived after dark, temperature a few degrees above zero, at the massive Daimon (large gate) which marks the entrance to the mountain-top monastery town. It's a breathtaking sight to behold when you walk up out of the forest and the flood-lit structure fills your vision!

Yesterday we visited the tomb of Kobo Daishi and some of the large temples and pagodas which attract many foreign and Japanese pilgrims and tourists all year around.

For me, it was the final step in this 7 week expedition and pilgrimage. I've appreciated the many encouraging comments and help along the way, thank you everyone!

  • Last temple, #88

Wow, what a beautiful final temple. Coming down from the mountains yesterday evening I arrived at Okuboji, temple #88 to catch the last rays of the late autumn sun through the myriad colors of the maple trees. It was a special moment and I could share it with pilgrim friends who I had crossed on and off throughout the last 6 weeks.

Over 1000km walked to get to this point, and donations in the last week have rolled in to meet and exceed the goal of 44 blind people given sight. Thank you!

Now I have 2 final days to walk back around to temple #1, in order to complete the circuit of Shikoku island.

  • 2 weeks left to hike. Mountain time!

Today brought me back to the coast, to temple #59 on the north-west corner of Shikoku island. I've covered over 800km, and have 2 weeks remaining to hike the remaining 350km or so. I usually start walking about 7am and continue until about 5pm when it starts to get dark and I look for a camp spot.

I plan to make a detour in a day or two and climb the highest mountain on the island, before returning to the trail at temple #60.

A few days ago the wind arrived from the north and temperatures plummeted to below 5° one night. As I'm generally sleeping under the stars it was a few nights on the edge of comfort, but happily the temperature is back up again.

  • Half way around!

Yesterday was day 22 of 44 on the trail, and over 650 km under the sandals, and more recently, shoes.

The weather has been unusually dry for Shikoku, only 3 days of walking in the rain. The temperature is comfortable, between 15° (in the mountains) and 28°. I've been free-camping and sleeping out under the stars almost every night. Now and then I come across a pilgrim shelter where i can sleep inside, and friendly Japanese locals have also invited me to stay for the night.

The last few days I noticed a chill in the air, and this no doubt precedes the impending autumn and the myriad colors I will get to enjoy as the trees release their leaves.

Most days I meet other pilgrims on the trail, sometimes walking or eating together before parting ways (everyone has their own pace.)

Stay tuned for another update in a week or so.

  • First steps : the pilgrimage begins.

    Today the pilgrimage started.

Day 1 of 44, starting from temple 1 of 88 at Ryozen-ji, and the first step of 1200 km.

Shikoku is drifting into autumn. The o-henro path meanders through small villages interspersed with groves of persimmon and mandarin oranges. The temperature is mid 20s and I'm full of energy and excitement.

Hi. If you're reading this you've probably donated to help this great cause, which encourages me too! Thanks again. Tomorrow I start the journey to get to Shikoku island. It will involve hitchhiking a day from lake Biwa in the Shiga region of Japan, then a couple of days cycling over a 70km-long bicycle bridge from the mainland to Shikoku island. I expect to start the pilgrimage on foot in about a week. Don't forget, I'll publish photos and stories to the Facebook page regularly, here:
