Participating in BOXING ALLEY'S FIT TO FIGHT CHALLENGE (27 October 2023)

Six weeks ago, I decided to try something outside of my comfort zone and embark on a 6-week boxing challenge. My goal was to improve my physical fitness, but also make a lifestyle change to improve my confidence and mental health. From this, I have discovered a passion for a sport that I never thought I would have the confidence to do, or actually be somewhat good at! It has opened me up to a whole new positive community and drastically improved my wellbeing!
After a series of consistent 5:30am starts for the last 6 weeks, I figured why not keep on going? I am now participating in an 8-week boxing challenge to prepare me for my first ever fight in the ring! As part of this challenge, I will also be fundraising for Gumboot Friday, which is an awesome initiative by the I Am Hope Foundation.
Everyone struggles with their mental health at some stage, but many can’t access support because of barriers like cost and distance. Gumboot Friday works to break down these barriers by offering completely funded counselling with a registered professional with options of in-person or online sessions.
I have personally utilised these services and feel passionate about improving the accessibility of mental health support for NZ youth, who often don’t know who to turn to when they are struggling.
