Get Uncomfortable for Kiwi Kids - Lets get this conversation out in the open, raise money and challenge ourselves at the same time!

Nelson / Tasman

Too many NZ children are dying at the hands of adults.

It can be a really uncomfortable topic, but it’s one that we need to face and address if anything is going to change.

Over the coming fortnight, I’m “Getting Uncomfortable for Kiwi Kids”. I’ll be completing a range of personal growth challenges that are outside MY own personal comfort zone and donating to local organisation Safeguarding Children as I successfully complete each challenge.

Each day, I’ll update the page to let you know what I’m doing for the following day’s challenge so check in regularly! I’m open to any suggestions too (within reason!)

Please support me by following my journey (or completing your own “unique to you” challenges) and if you are able to, then please consider donating what you can to support the work that Safeguarding Children does in our local community.

Week Four Complete - Working through some great suggestions!  29 May 2026

Week Four has again been very productive! This week…

*I met with the Safeguarding team (see the great photo they are using for their Facebook and newsletter)

*Completed several suggestions including

- Attending a Hot Yoga class (booked for next week)

- Attending a Psychodrama class (booked for next fortnight)

- Contacting local political reps about child safeguarding and protection (one fast and thorough reply thus far from Rachel Boyack, thank you Rachel)

- Completing an interesting exercise in self analysis through food choice

- Going for a run.

Next week -

*I’ve been given a challenge to wear fancy dress in public. This is so out of my comfort zone that I’ve decided I will do it (and will wear it down the Main Street in either Richmond or Nelson) but ONLY if I get some more donations from at least 5 NEW donors (including pledges I’m currently waiting on) to go towards the worthy Safeguarding Children Initiative. It’s in your hands people!

*I’ve also been challenged to document my sabbatical, recording what I’ve been doing and what I’ve learnt during my 9 months off work. What a great idea. I’m going to contribute a story to “The Sabbatical Project” website and see if they accept it. My sabbatical is coming to an end soon as I’m starting a new job so the timing is perfect and this is what I’ll focus on this coming week 😊

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause. Today’s suggestion - go for a run. This was out of my comfort zone for a number of reasons - I worried if my knees/bladder (tmi sorry) could hold up and I feel a bit self conscious running in public. Regardless, I headed out to a local park I normally avoid (after some rather large dogs rushed at me a long time ago) and ran (or rather slow jogged) the track. Felt great afterwards and no body/dog issues arose thankfully 😊 Challenge difficulty 4.5/10

I am loving the variety of challenge ideas I am getting. Today’s was interesting- “Go to Hell pizza and order the menu item you can relate to most right now (Side note, I think they mean the name rather than the food type?!) Say what you chose and why”. This was uncomfortable as I never order from here due to the brand not aligning with my own personal values/beliefs but I made an exception for this challenge and found the staff friendly and the food good. I chose the Wrath pizza because a) I feel angry about what’s happening to NZ kids, b) Anger is the catalyst for what has happened c) Wrath is a good acronym to remember strategies to use when feeling angry (Walking away, Regaining control, Am I ok to return now and if not what can I do, Talking to someone (social support) and seeking Help if feelings continue). I also chose Spirit pasta because our Spirit needs nurturing just as much as our body and mind (and children are no exception) and a sense of community spirit means we can achieve great things together. So much to unpack from this one interesting suggestion!

Halfway through Week 4! I’ve extended the end date by 2 weeks due to the large number of new challenge ideas I’ve received this week. I want to try as many as I can. This week (so far) I have *Met with the Safeguarding Children team and had my photo taken for their Facebook and newsletter * Booked in at Forme Fitness to try a Hot Yoga class *Booked in to try a local psychodrama class * Modified the suggestion “Contact 3 local political party reps and ask -Why should I vote for you?” to ask instead what their party is doing to address the high rates of non accidental child deaths in NZ. Challenge difficulty - political contact 3/10, (Thought of doing) Hot Yoga 5/10, (Thought of doing) Psychodrama 7.5/10

Week 3 Complete! I spent this week completing one of the suggestions I received - Random acts of kindness for strangers. I don’t want to spoil any surprises but let’s just say that I hope I brightened some Richmond people’s lives a little bit this week.
