My challenge is to run a half marathon at the Race Tekapō event in September to raise funds & awareness for Gut Cancer in Aotearoa / NZ.
Nationwide
Most of you will be familiar with my story by now, but for those who aren't - I'll keep it short and sweet. In August 2019, I lost my darling Dad to Pancreatic Cancer - it was aggressive and fast acting, so his suffering was significant but short-lived.
I was lucky even to get 4 precious weeks with him before he passed away.
Gut Cancers, such as PC are some of the most misunderstood, misdiagnosed, underfunded diseases known, and yet often, some of the mostly deadly. Many of those diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have less than a 10% survival rate, post-diagnosis.
This challenge will not only help raise funds towards critical research and treatments of gut cancers, but will also help raise awareness about these diseases. I want to give hope to those battling any type of gut cancer that a diagnosis isn't the end of the road, and that we are fighting to improve the lives and outcome for those affected.
Rāpaki Run/Walk 17 July 2021
Well, today I attempted to run up the Rāpaki track with one of my besties, and it really knocked my confidence. I thought I'd be able to slowly run most of it, as I've been fairly happy with my progress on the flat, but I was on struggle street from the incline of the road before the track even starts! It was a real eye opener, and made me realise that if I'm going to have any chance of competing the Race Tekapō HM, I need to get on the hills every week. Especially having checked out the race profile again - there's a steep ascent up to the summit of Mount John after the 2km mark! Yikes. Watch this space for more updates....
