April 6th 2018 will be the day my locks are lopped for cancer. I will be going the Full Monty and having my head shaved.
Canterbury
My journey started 7 years ago when a close family member was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (Bone Marrow) cancer. Mrs J suffered for several years, with chemo and transplants, before passing away, leaving behind children and family. Her loss impacted me in a way I have yet to fully understand. I still think of Mrs J when I hear any Rod Stewart song especially 'Sailing'. She is missed greatly.
In 2016 my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer; his battle was short as the doctors managed to diagnose and treat him quickly. My father found comfort and support from his wife and his children. Now with his regular check-ups, his “Warrant of Fitness” as he calls it, he continues to make sure he is still fighting fit.
I am so proud of how my dad handled the news and how strong he was through it all; it has given me the knowledge and strength that I can face anything life throws at me.
I decided from that point I wanted to do something to remember Mrs J and to support my dad, close family friends; Mr Adam, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour, had two surgeries and died within 18 months, Mr David with colon cancer who to this day still receives treatment and Ms Moore, who is currently on a crusade against breast cancer. Also giving hope to other people who have been through or are currently going through cancer treatment. My father's strength has enabled me to proceed along this path in shaving my head to support others.
I have been growing my hair for the past two years, for it to be cut and sent to "Freedom Wigs" – Dunedin, who specialise in hand crafting hairpieces; making the most realistic and natural looking hairpieces. Each hairpiece generally takes 20 ponytails to make – that’s about 5 individual donations.
I encourage everyone to consider making a donation to give hope and smiles back to those that need it. Join me and grow your hair so you can shave it for a good cause.
I have faith that with my hair donation to Freedom Wigs and a monetary donation to the Cancer Society that many others will find strength and hope to continue to look at the options, be positive, committed and strong as my father taught me.
I am giving my hair as a beacon of hope for others and to show there is support around you.
My motivation is to support and give hope to individuals and families that are affected by cancer, not limiting my focus to one type, but to include all forms of cancer. I want to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
