Harvey House's 1000km Challenge to support the incredible work of The Acorn Project in Hawke's Bay.
Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui
Each year, our boarding house raises funds for a particular cause. In 2024, we are supporting The Acorn Project, an amazing organisation that supports young people and their families living with cancer in Hawke's Bay.
We are supporting this charity as Micky Peacock, one of the members of our House, is currently fighting brain cancer. We want to stand with Micky and help an organisation that has given him and his family invaluable support during this time.
Part of our fundraising efforts is the '1000km Challenge' in which we will collectively attempt to cover 1000km on the afternoon of Sunday 26 May. Our students will cycle, run or row to meet our goal. Each of our five year groups will be responsible for covering 200km (the distance from Micky's home to WCS), but members of staff will also be jumping in to support.
Challenge Completed! 30 May 2024
We undertook the '1000km Challenge' on Sunday afternoon with each year group responsible for completing 200km towards the total. Boys completed their kms (around 20 per person) by walking, biking, running and rowing. Superb House Spirit was shown by all to complete the challenge in 2 hours and 37 minutes. It was a great effort and some other houses also joined in. Groups of juniors cycled up to Upokongaro and back to complete their share, but we would particularly like to acknowledge the juniors who put in mammoth shifts on the rowing machines and the three students who ran a half marathon. We were joined by Micky and his parents, Marcus and Georgie, who both chipped in with a few kilometers each. We ended up go well beyond our target distance and clocked up around 1530km - a sensational effort.
