Hayden Cooper - Running to raise awareness of mental health in New Zealand and to raise money for Key to Life Charity.
Auckland
This year I am taking part in an event called the AGS 1000 Miler. The AGS 1000 Miler is an event which is used to help give back to the wider community and to help those in need. The 1000 Miler takes place every 4 years and is an event where Auckland Grammar School boys run, in relay fashion, to reach 1000 miles within 4 days in order to fundraise for charity. 2019 will be my only chance as a Grammar boy to participate in such a meaningful event to help others in the community, and I look forward to being able to help those in need.
Did you know three families lose a loved one to suicide every two days in New Zealand? This year we will be fundraising for Key to Life run by Mike King, New Zealander of the year 2019 and Mental Health advocate. Key to Life aim to help New Zealanders battle mental illness which is such a major and growing issue in modern society. As New Zealanders we have the “toughen up” mindset. Due to this stigma, some New Zealanders try to hide the mental problems faced throughout life, when really they should be seeking help to get them through this difficult time. Key to Life are trying to spread the message that it is ok to talk to others about these issues we face and are trying to help New Zealanders through mental health issues.
I want to do this race because I like challenging myself and I think it will be a fun and fulfilling opportunity. Doing this event and raising money is a way for me to contribute, in a practical way, to a cause that can benefit anyone who might be struggling and with nowhere to turn. This year is also the 150th Anniversary of Auckland Boys Grammar School and is a very special year for everyone involved at AGS. So by competing in this event it gives me the chance to say thank you and repay the community for supporting the school for 150 years. Please donate by sponsoring me so I can reach my $500 target for such a worthy charity.
I am running in the AGS 1000 miler across the four days to help raise money and awareness for mental health.
