I'm Julie Collard, teacher at Waikowhai Intermediate School in Mt Roskill, Auckland, and I'm walking the Te Araroa - NZ's long pathway: 3,060km from Cape Reinga to Bluff this 2025/26 season. I want my students to get chances to enjoy the outdoors too, but many can't afford our Education Outside of the Classroom experiences. Can you help?
Spending time in nature has huge benefits, and attending school camp is vitally important for our emerging adolescents. At my school participation in outdoor education has been falling steadily. Many families cannot afford the high cost. Please help us subsidise Year 7 camp to help as many children as possible to take part. The camp is Finlay Park, Lake Karapiro. It is an awesome camp, but the cost is $395 per student. We hope to send 150 students.
I'm doing the hard mahi - carrying all my gear in a pack on my back for 5 months and over 3,000 muddy and steep kilometres, in all weather, hoping to inspire my studentsl and raise money that will make a difference in their lives.
Section 1 of the TA complete! 3 October 2025
I walked 220km from Cape Reinga to Bluff over 12 days! I had the best time, though carrying a pack and walking up to 30k a day was punishing on the body. Being outside appreciating our beautiful country was wonderful. I want my students to be able to do that too. So far, enough money for two students to attend camp has been raised, but we can do better; there are many more needy students who really want to go!
Enjoy a picture of me at Te Werahi Beach, next to Cape Reinga.
Dear Cathy, thank you so much! That’s unbelievably kind and generous of you. 🥰 Julie
