  • When life gives you lemons...

Kia ora, Mary Seelen here, Brodie's mum. We just wanted to post an update as a lot has happened since Brodie's last one.

Unfortunately but understandably for the safety of everyone, organisers of the Coast to Coast had to cancel the two-day event due to covid. This was closely followed by Ironman NZ postponing until December 2022 as well - Brodie like so many other athletes who trained so hard for these events was understandably pretty gutted. He had planned on organising his own unofficial versions of these events (like he did for his half-ironman last year), but life has had other plans for him!

On the 20th of Feb, just one week after starting his Outdoor Ed course on the West Coast, Brodie was airlifted to Christchurch hospital with Pericardial Effusion.

At this stage, through a process of elimination, Brodie's Drs think his Pericardial Effusion was most likely caused by his graft vs host disease but they're still awaiting the analysis of the fluid they drained from around his heart and as it is such a rare complication we're still uncertain as to what it will all mean/look like moving forward for Brodie. In the meantime, he has been put on two additional meds to help prevent a reoccurrence of it.

Unfortunately, Brodie has been told by his Drs that he can't run the risk of exercising at all for the next three months and devastatingly this means he can no longer do his Outdoor Ed course on the Coast. Brodie has been super gutted by this as he was absolutely loving his course and all the people on it and he was just so excited for the year ahead after what has been a pretty tough and challenging couple of years💔 This has also all come fresh on the heels of the disappointment of the Coast to Coast being canceled and Ironman NZ being postponed after months and months of hard graft and countless hours training. Normally to de-stress or process stuff Brodie would head out for a run, or a surf or something physical but this is also something he can't do right now, so all in all it's been like a quadruple whammy for him. And yet here he is at 18, in amongst all the uncertainty, managing to smile again and he has started looking into alternative options for the year ahead, with the positive mindset and firm resolve he will get back to the course on the Coast next year - so super proud of this boy, his fighting spirit and his incredible resilience! ❤️

Ironically, it is the same two organisations Brodie's been busy fundraising for that are looking after him (and us), yet again!

We feel incredibly grateful to the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Service team for the awesome job they've done (and continue to do), looking after our boy, and we are so, so grateful also to be back at Ranui our home away from home (just across the road from the hospital should we need it) ❤️💛 ❤️

As a mum, it has really bought home to me yet again just how important a place like Ranui is for patients and their families at a time when you feel completely overwhelmed by everything that's out of your control and all your focus and energy is on your child's health and all you want/need to do is be there by their side. So to have the massive weight lifted of questions like where are we going to stay? How are we going to afford to not be working while we're living away from home? All the while not knowing how long you'll need to be there or what tomorrow may hold, it is just such a massive relief to have Ranui to call home - so if you haven't shared out Brodie's Give a little page yet please do and if you have thank you!!

We're meeting again with Brodies Drs tomorrow, so fingers crossed for good news this week - will keep you posted.

Thanks again for all your support ❤️

  • One down, two to go!

Wanted to share this video of my first challenge with you all and say thank you so much for all of your support - it truly does mean the world to me.

Just over a year ago, I had finished one of the most aggressive forms of chemo you can take and was having my bone marrow transplant. Unable to walk, eat, and barely able to move.

As you know, a year to the day later (Saturday the 11th of December), I was signed up to do a half Ironman 70.3 in Taupo, but understandably that was canceled due to Covid. So with the help and support of friends and family, I headed up to Lake Rotoiti and have completed my 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21km run, my first (unofficial) half Iron man.

A huge shout out to everyone who came along and supported me in the pouring rain at Lake Rotoiti as I slogged it out for 6hrs and 58 mins. And of course, to my little brother Liam who was my bone marrow donor, without him I may not be here today, can’t thank you enough for being the best little brother in the world!!

Thanks again for all the love and support, from my diagnosis till now. Looking forward to taking on the Kathmandu Coast to Coast in Feb and the full Iron man NZ in March. 2022 is going to be another big one!

And to all of you who have donated thank you so much for your generous support, please continue to share out this page and the video so that we can reach the target!

All the best for a happy and safe New Year.

    Thanks again, Brodie

  • Change of plans

Kia ora everyone, since my first planned event, the NZ half-ironman 70.3 a year to the day of my bone marrow transplant, has been cancelled due to Covid, I've decided to mark the day by heading up to Lake Rotoiti, St Arnaud where I'll take on the challenge of completing the distance of a half ironman for the first time.

So, starting at 8 am on Saturday the 11th of December, I'll head out for a 1.9km swim from the jetty at Lake Rotoiti, followed by a 90km bike ride, and then a 21 km run. If anyone would like to come along and join me on the day for the entire challenge or even just a leg of it, or maybe just come along and help cheer me on, that'd be great I'd love to see you there!

  • So everything just got a little bit more challenging!

A lot has happened since my last update - it has been a challenging and busy few months that's for sure. Unfortunately, around 7 weeks ago I ended up back in the hospital with a couple of visits to A&E over 2 weeks, with difficulty breathing and chest pain along with a bunch of other symptoms - we had 2 weeks of uncertainty before Drs confirmed I'd developed chronic Graft Vs Host Disease (GVHD) this is a pretty common complication that can occur after a bone marrow transplant, however, I was hoping I'd be one of the lucky ones and avoid it altogether.

GVHD occurs when the donor's T cells (the graft) view the patient's healthy cells (the host) as foreign and attack and damage them, there are varying degrees of severity of GVHD, from mild to life-threatening/organ failure - thankfully at this stage mine appears to be more at the mild end. I have my age, fitness and the fact my brother was the donor and pretty much a perfect match all factors going in my favour and Drs have been able to get on top of it through running a course of steroids and upping my cyclosporine (immune suppressant) levels. This does however mean that I will now stay on all my meds and remain immuno-compromised for much longer. There's still a lot of unknowns such as how long I will have GVHD for - it may be months, years or life-long it's really a case of wait and see, which has been a bit to get my head around.

In terms of my training, I've gone from going great and loving training to not being able to train at all for a few weeks but I've been gradually building back my strength and fitness and I'm now finally getting back to where I was before I developed the GVHD. So fingers crossed it'll be smoother sailing from here!

  • Best Surprise Ever!

      9 September 2021

Thought I should share this video surprise from ten days ago here too, as some of you may like to see it. I am incredibly honoured to be able to receive the Nutri-Grain Tony Jackson IRONMAN NZ scholarship this year!! Watch as Verna Cook-Jackson (Tony’s widow) surprises me by letting me know I am the 2022 Tony Jackson Scholarship Recipient.

Tony Jackson was an IRONMAN New Zealand 28-time finisher & a Hall of Famer, recognized for helping athletes achieve their IRONMAN goals irrespective of their athletic ability, personal challenges, background, age or gender.

I'm really pumped to get to my first full Ironman race which this scholarship has made possible, and super excited to be able to raise more awareness and funds for two incredible organisations that helped save my life in the process.
