The eruption of Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai is one of the worst volcanic eruptions the Pacific has experienced in decades.
The eruption triggered a tsunami that destroyed homes and livelihoods along the coast of Tonga. The full extent of damage to Tonga and many nearby islands is yet to be determined.
Tonga and its surrounding islands have been cut off from the rest of the world, communication lines have been disrupted with no timeframe given on restoration.
It is estimated that up to 80,000 people have been affected by the latest catastrophe. The full extent of damage and need has yet to be determined.
New Zealand Red Cross has set up a special Pacific Tsunami Appeal to support the people of Tonga and affected surrounding Pacific islands.
Your donation will go towards providing access to safe and clean drinking water due to saltwater inundation caused by tsunami waves and ashfall from the eruption. Shelter is also a concern, particularly for those communities near the coast line.
Tonga Red Cross teams are on the ground supporting evacuations, providing first aid if needed, and distributing prepositioned relief supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, kitchen sets, shelter tool kits and hygiene kits for immediate need.
More relief supplies will be needed, and those supplies will also need to be replaced. Additionally, food will need to be distributed and communications and infrastructure re-established. We need your help to make this happen.
Donate to our Pacific Tsunami Appeal today and know that you have made a life-changing difference to the many affected by disaster who urgently need your help. '
