Hugo’s Fight for Life: Please Help This Brave 11-Year-Old Reach the U.S. for Treatment

Brave 11-year-old Hugo is fighting cancer again. His only hope is life-saving CAR T-cell therapy in the U.S. — help fund his chance.

Auckland

Every year, our family takes on a fitness challenge to raise money for good causes — it’s something we’ve come to love. It keeps us active, gives us purpose, and lets us teach our boys what it means to do something for others.

This time, we’re raising them for a very special little boy in New Zealand — Hugo, who is in desperate need of help. He’s a bright, funny, brave 11-year-old who deserves any chance he can get!

Our family — Greg, myself (Gen), and our boys Leo (5) & Raiden (1½) are taking on a series of challenges to raise money and hope for Hugo.

Greg and I run a trail half-marathon in November and an additional challenge in December each too

Leo has proudly chosen to complete a 6 km duathlon

Raiden will attempt a lap of our park on his scooter (his favourite thing to do)

Hugo, was diagnosed at age 9 with Stage 4 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma — a rare, aggressive childhood cancer. After 9 rounds of chemo and 28 radiation sessions, he was declared clear in Aug 2024, but relapsed in Mar 2025.

Now wheelchair-bound and in severe pain, options in NZ are running out. Hugo has been accepted into a CAR T-cell therapy trial in the U.S., offering new hope. The treatment is free, but travel and living costs total $500,000 NZD.

Sam and Aaron are selling assets, and exploring every option they can, but they can’t do it alone. Every donation, big or small, helps get Hugo closer to potentially life-saving treatment and the chance to be a normal kid again which the Donaldsons are desperate for.

Update on Hugo's Progress  3 December 2025

I wanted to share an update and message received from Hugo's family:

We just want to take this opportunity to provide an update to all those people who have supported us in so many ways.

We have managed to negotiate a payment plan for Hugo’s treatment in the US. This means we can start the process without full payment upfront.

This Monday we were able to collect Hugo’s blood to be sent to Texas to allow them to make the Car - T cells for infusion. This can take between 4-6 weeks and once ready and as long as Hugo remains healthy enough we can travel to Houston for treatment.

We know we still have some large hurdles to jump on this journey but we wanted to thank each and every one of you for your support in helping us to get to this first stage and keeping our hope alive.

Please keep Hugo in your thoughts and prayers.

Love Aaron, Sam, Hugo and Louis.

Thank you so much to every one of you for all your support for Hugo with your incredible donations! This page will be closing at the end of this month, please do share with others for us and Keep Hugo and his family in your prayers.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
