I am cycling a circuit of the South Island starting and finishing in Lyttelton, to raise money for Kids With Arthritis NZ

  • A Big Thank You

The weeks have flown by since my South Island ride. I have been in contact with Kids with Arthritis New Zealand to ask how the funds given by you all would be used.

They have a wish list and I chose this one, for which there is a budget of $20,000.00 of which there is a $5000.00 shortfall.

Your fundraising efforts amounted to more than this, and I am sure there will be overruns in the budget for this project that we can help with.

Thank you again on Behalf of Kids with Arthritis NZ

    Adrienne Crowe

"Primary Age Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) Book

Currently there is a book that rheumatologists provide for teenage children to explain their arthritic condition. However, there is no appropriate book for younger children.

Our intention is to engage a writer and illustrator to write and illustrate a new book for the younger children that we will then publish and make available to rheumatologists to give to newly diagnosed families.

We will be involving the National Paediatric Rheumatology Team from Starship Hospital and a paediatric rheumatologist in Whangarei who we have a strong relationship with when developing the content of the book."

  • Day 15 Mossburn to Bluff 140km

      11 March 2022

A gentle downhill ride, with no hills, through Southland farmland. A mixture of gravel and sealed roads and cycle trails. Arriving at Stirling Point at Bluff was an emotional moment for me. I was met by my husband Richard and KWANZ parent Donnah Rule.

For personal reasons this is the end of my ride. 1800km solo unsupported cycling in 2 weeks. Thank you to everyone who has donated to Kids with Arthritis NZ. Donations can still be made until 31st March 2022

The day started with a boat ride on the early 'staff boat' across Lake Wakatpu to Walter Peak Station. Riding took me through the mountains over the Von Hill crossing from Otago to Southland. Amazing high country scenery.

  • Day 4+5

      28 February 2022
    Main image

After a rest day in Picton on Sunday,

I cycled 110km from Picton to Richmond near Nelson over Maungatapu Saddle, at 750m elevation. My biggest challenge so far. The final 250m to the top was steep loose and rutted from the recent rain. Hike a bike for this girl

On Thursday 24th February, I begin my amended adventure, riding from Lyttelton on a back-roads to the Inland Road route to Kaikoura, then on to Picton over 4 days.

From Picton I will ride the South Island section of Tour Aotearoa to Bluff.

I will try to post updates when phone charge allows.

  • Start location change

      16 February 2022

Today Im feeling sad and disappointed.

Ive been training so hard for the last 18 months

The rapidly evolving virus situation has sadly forced me, for safety and MOH reasons, not to travel to the North Island, as I can't have a suitable rescue, isolation and virus testing plan while riding on remote trails.

I'm not a rule breaker, so flying to Auckland, and riding this section, with the potential risk of a close contact situation or catching the virus is too much of a risk for me.

I still plan to ride the South Island route, Picton to Bluff, which is in my 'home Island', starting and finishing in Lyttelton, so a different but similar time and distance challenge

I hope this still makes all of you wonderful donors feel that my route change is still worthy of your generous donations for my cause: Kids with Arthritis NZ.

Tough times for the whole country.

  • Slight change of course

      8 February 2022
    Main image

While my training continues, Ive made the difficult decision to change my start location to South of Auckland, due to the evolving Omicron outbreak.

In doing this I am protecting myself and the Northland community. To get from Auckland to Cape Reinga and back to Auckland there were too many close contact situations with the potential to catch and spread the virus.

Rest assured Im still pedalling 2600km to Bluff.

5 weeks to go until I'll be packed up and ready to fly north to begin my ride.

I'm pedalling longer distances now and have cycled over 300km in the last 5 days. To add novelty to my training, I crossed Arthurs Pass to Greymouth over 2 days last weekend. 230km and 3300metres of climbing with my bike loaded up. Felt good. 🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️🚵‍♂️
