I am donating my hair to make a wig.
Nationwide
Cancer effects so many of us. It is not just the scarily high statistics, of 1 in three women getting some form of cancer at some stage in their lives and almost every second man. It is also the wider impact that this has on families, friends and communities. I belong to one of those families.
The cancer society does a fantastic job, from investing in life saving research, to being there with a cup of tea or coffee while you wait through all the testing.
But although this is raising money to help support them (and anything you can spare, will make a difference), I am really cutting off my hair to help someone deal with the impacts of having their lives flipped upside down. It is hard enough to deal with your diagnosis, without everyone else knowing about it too.
Freedom wigs is the only place in New Zealand where you can donate hair for wig making and the criteria is very strict. Not all hair is suitable, and to be suitable the hair must not have been dyed in any way, and be longer than 14 inches. With this criteria, there is limited hair available for wig making (https://freedomwigs.com/).
So I am not shaving it all off, but I am booked in to get 14 inches removed on the 22nd of March at 12.45 pm at Geneive Hair Quarters in Taupo (https://www.geneivehairquarters.co.nz/). 14 inches is over a foot, so it will still be a length I have not had since being a baby. Hair grows back right...

The big chop 22 March 2021
Today was the day, and the chop has been made. I made the decision to cut as much as we could for the wig and then we have styled what was left.
I want to thank everyone who has contributed. I have been blown away by your generosity and kindness. I know the contributions are all going to a great cause.
Having short hair for a couple of hours has been interesting, it is the small things you notice. So far these include
1. When you move your head, no hair moves
2. When you get into the shower you don’t have to tie your hair up, to prevent it getting wet.
3. When it does get wet, it only takes a few minutes to dry (the hair dryer has been out away)
4. I no longer need the hair ties that have lived around my wrist for years.
I will leave the page open for a few more days, but again thank you very much for your generous donations.
Thank you !!!
