Doing an Ironman to Raise Awareness about ADHD
Auckland
During my 20's I battled drug addiction, alcoholism and various mental health issues, not realising that 90% of my self-destructive behaviours were a symptom of my undiagnosed ADHD. Once I was diagnosed, my life changed and ever since I have been committed to speaking openly about my experiences, challenging stereotypes around ADHD and encouraging people to seek treatment.
A couple of years ago, I committed to attempting a full-distance Ironman triathlon, with no previous running or biking experience, and with only 7 months to prepare. I did this to raise funds and awareness about ADHD and hopefully inspire some healthy conversation along the way. The result was far better than I could have hoped, and a number of people have now sought diagnosis as a result of those conversations.
With that in mind, I've decided to do it all again. On the 1st of March 2025, I will once again endure a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, followed by a 42km run for good measure.
I will be doing this to raise funds for Voices of Hope - a fantastic organisation who believe in the power of speaking openly about lived experiences to create positive change. Their storytelling platform exists to bring better understanding of mental health challenges, promote help-seeking behaviours and useful resources, and ultimately spread hope.
