Walking the length of New Zealand to raise funds gynaecological cancer research & education.
Auckland
Kia ora!
My name is Kate. I'm an athlete, adventure seeker, nature lover, and a glass half full kind of gal. In 2023, I also become an ovarian cancer survivor.
I'm motivated to turn my experience with cancer into something that can create positive change for others - and I'd like to show it doesn't have to limit what you can achieve!
What's Kate's Ovary Long Walk?
Starting Oct 2023, I'll be walking the length of New Zealand to raise much-needed funds and awareness for gynaecological cancer. I'll be supporting two charities: Talk Peach and the Graci Foundation.
Why the big challenge?
The statistics around gynaecological cancer are not pretty.
More women die of a gynaecological disease in NZ each year than people from melanoma, with one woman dying from ovarian cancer (the deadliest type) every 48 hours.
The average five year survival rate for ovarian cancer is around 40% and, to compare, breast cancers have a five year survival rate of more than 80%.
There is a huge need to increase public education and awareness of these cancers, and put funding into research efforts that could improve the outcomes of those suffering from a gynaecological cancer.
It's a huge task, so it needs a big challenge to help generate some noise!
What will the funds be used for?
All funds raised will be donated directly to the Graci Foundation and Talk Peach. This will be used to fund research efforts and continue to provide support, advocacy and education.
Bluff is in my sights! 30 January 2024
Two days ago, I climbed to 1000m above sea level at Telford Peak. As I scrambled up the final few metres, I caught a glimpse of what I’ve been aiming for since I started - Bluff!
It was a magical feeling to finally have the end in sight and to know that my hardest days were behind me.
Now, I am just four days away from walking the final kilometres into Bluff. It’s been an absolutely incredible journey filled with adventure, amazing people, beautiful landscapes and a generous dose of challenge! It feels very bittersweet to be finishing, but I know there will be more exciting things to come.
This last week has proved to be a huge mental and physical challenge, but I’ve received an incredible amount of support from friends, family and strangers, which has given me the motivation I need to get there.
With the recent outpouring of support, the story has started to gain a lot of momentum and public interest. I believe it will continue to garner interest beyond the finish date of the walk, and for that reason, I’ve decided to extend the fundraising close date to February 24th. I’m out here to make as much impact as possible and I believe this will help me to do so!
Thank you all for your generous and ongoing support 💜 I appreciate it all so much.
