Tom Hsu - Live out Love

Auckland

Tom Hsu RIP 10/02/1949 - 30/04/2023

Although he bore the cross of sickness all his life, the sufferings he suffered made people see God's miraculous deeds and countless graces. Thank you and praise the Lord, all glory to God!

Brother Tom Hsu was born on February 10, 1949. He graduated from the Taiwanese Air Force Mechanic School in 1973 and worked at the Hsinchu Air Force Base and Taipei Air Force Headquarters. After retiring from the military, he worked at Far Eastern Air Transport and then China Airlines until he left to immigrate to New Zealand in 1992. In 1976, he married Sister Joyce Lien and they had a son, Vicent Hsu, and a daughter, Kingy Hsu Hagan. They both have families of their own. He has a daughter-in-law, Summer Wang, and a son- in-law, Jun Hagan. He has grandchildren, Zion Hsu, Zyana Hsu, and a granddaughter-in- law, Soia Hagan. After immigrating to New Zealand, he worked for a gospel immigration company to help fellow immigrants settle in, which gave him the opportunity to serve his fellow countrymen.

He was a lifelong learner with a wide range of interests and a love for life. Despite suffering from Papillomaviridae since childhood, which required frequent surgeries, he remained full of positive and optimistic vitality. In 1993, his wife and children began attending Auckland Christian Mandarin Church services. Because Sister Joyce Lien participated in worship and praise ministry and opened up their home for weekly song practice, he had the opportunity to interact with young people, often sharing life experiences and knowledge of health care with them and building good relationships. He was baptized and became a member of God's family in 1996. He studied acupuncture for many years, which enabled him to help his friends with some health problems. Because he was a long- time patient himself, he had a special empathy and took the initiative to care for those in need. Due to the recurrent tumors on his vocal cords that required surgical removal, he often had critical conditions later. In 2010, he had a total laryngectomy surgery in Taiwan due to cancerous lesions in the affected area. He underwent 31 sessions of radiation therapy and 7 sessions of chemotherapy. In 2011, he was diagnosed with lung tumors, and in 2017, a tumor measuring 11cm was found in his lungs. After understanding his condition, he chose natural therapy and coexisted with cancer. He thanked God for adding many years to his life. He often said, "Live each day to the fullest." With the various herbs that God gave him and a grateful heart, he enjoyed every day that God gave him. On November 9, 2022, he was rushed to the emergency room because of coughing up a large amount of blood. After examination, it was found that the lung tumor had increased in size and spread to both lungs, with multiple bleeding points. The doctors judged that the harm of invasive treatment was significant and he decided to forego treatment again, hoping to spend more time with his family. His beloved daughter and her family returned from Japan in late December to accompany him through Christmas. His son and in-laws also often visited to enjoy family time.

On March 13th, he was admitted to the hospital once again.

On March 19th, after being discharged from the hospital, his condition continued to worsen. He started to become unsteady on his feet, easily falling down, and had a loss of appetite. On April 19th, the family doctor and hospice medical staff jointly recommended hospitalization again. After entering a coma, he began to receive comfort care on April 22nd. On April 30th, at 7:33pm, he peacefully passed away in the Lord.

Despite carrying the cross of illness and pain throughout his life, the suffering he endured allowed others to witness the miraculous works and countless blessings of God. Praise and thanks be to God, to whom all glory belongs!
