Kilometres for Kids Lockdown Marathon Series

  • We're still here, and we're still running! Next up Auckland Marathon

      21 October 2020

We began this campaign with the simple goal of counting down from four, which sounds easy until you attach a marathon to each digit!

With the recent drops in alert level we're lacing up again for the Auckland Marathon on November 1 (hello level 2!) and Queenstown about three weeks later on November 20 for level 1.

Auckland will be the first public event in the campaign and getting out under level 1 with thousands of others will be quite a welcome change!

Stay tuned for updates, and as ever, THANK YOU to all our fine supporters! You can really be proud of the support you've given kids through these unsettled times.

Why am I doing this? I love running, but running for a good cause gives it so much more meaning. It's a fun way to give back to our community. Thank you for your support!

(And thank you for joining the run Stacey!)

We did it! We ran a marathon for each drop in Alert Level, and saved the hardest for last with a non-stop run from rugged Whatipu beach to downtown Auckland. That's almost 1,000m of elevation gain over several rather large hills, and we finished up with well-earned cold beverages and a hot soak at the Tepid Baths.

The marathoners L-R: Brody, Magda (joined for the final leg), Nick, Dan, Stacey (look out for Stacey's bio in the next update).

  • A thank-you message from Big Buddy

      16 July 2020

Thank you so much for supporting the incredible efforts of Brody, Dan and Nick, & Stacey to raise money for charities like Big Buddy!

Big Buddy is focused on encouraging confidence and resilience in the lives of boys without their dad around. Your donations will be making a big difference by helping to find and screen good-hearted men to be a Big Buddy to a boy without his dad. Our Big and Little Buddies spend a few hours together each weekend doing simple things like kicking a ball, walking the dog or going to the beach.

The most important things a Big Buddy can do is show up, spend time and come back again. These simple gestures make a profound difference in the life of a young boy. Our research shows that boys gain confidence, build resilience and quickly become happier with a Big Buddy to trust and rely on.

One of our older Little Buddies, Jordan, once told us:

“If I didn’t have a Big Buddy...my path would have probably gone wrong, just being an idiot, taking that wrong path of life, not getting a job, not getting an education, just dropping out of school, doing nothing. Possibly ruining relationships within my family …He’s taken this dark side of me, pushed it away, brought out this more bright side and it’s affected absolutely everything”

    Thank you for your support!

Why are you doing this? Oh, so many reasons. I'm an explorer at heart and if there's a limit to how much time I can spend outdoors I'm yet to reach it. And I'm actually just a little impatient about covering ground, and running is like hiking... just fast. Call it speed hiking. I've spent days walking 30-50 km routes and now I go run that in a few hours. And the charity drive? Raising funds isn't something I'd really done before, so why not? Taking a deeper look into this, for me part of becoming a complete human means achieving something that only benefits others who need it. I'm exceptionally proud of our accomplishment so far!

  • Tune in for Saturday's Level 1 marathon. Join us for the last mile?

This Saturday we run from remote Whatipu to downtown Auckland for our third and final Alert Level marathon. With the country firmly in Level 1 and our calendars aligned we're busy psyching ourselves up for a fantastic little jog. What a way to celebrate the country's achievement and your generosity bringing in north of $2,000 in vital funding. Thanks again from all of us, and stay tuned for updates!

It would be great to have you along for part of the run (perhaps to the finish line downtown) on foot or bike, so if that's you please get in touch and we'll send you the final route.

    See you Saturday?

    Brody, Nick, Dan, & friends.

  • Level 2 (ultra)marathon done, and we just hit $2,000!

A huge thanks to all our supporters, support crew, families, and friends! Your generosity and encouragement were top of mind as we pushed ourselves further than we thought possible last Sunday. We each set personal records achieving our 55 km goal, and two of us pushed that out to 60 km for good measure.

Sunday began at 4:30AM with coffee and porridge, and by 5:19AM we were gliding through the darkness with just head torches and starlight to guide us for the next two hours until sunrise. We pushed on past fields, rivers, subdivisions, over bridges, navigating around the Tauranga harbour and onward to Mount Maunganui to meet Claire, Kate, and Sam for welcome supplies and the loop around the mountain.

With our backs to the rising sun and a comfortable temperature, Nick, Dan, and I kicked off the return journey along the same route, grumbling like old men about the state of our increasingly tired joints and muscles. It felt good to be on the home stretch with only 27.5 km to go!

Follow our route and join us vicariously https://www.relive.cc/view/v26M8mor13O

Not at all sped up! Full screen recommended.

We've now had a few days to recoup and while we're still feeling a little beat up physically, we're elated by the personal achievements, the welcome donations our self-imposed suffering has drawn in, and the connections we made along the way. We're starting to test the equipment with very short and light jogs around the block and planning the next episode.

Now for a request -- please share the campaign far and wide! We have at least one marathon to go, probably two, in fact we seem to be onto a good thing and may just continue indefinitely. We need to share the campaign with people sympathetic to the cause or interested in the adventure, and need your help to do this.

    With thanks,

Team K4K: Brody, Nick, Dan, Claire, Thamires, Kate, Sam, & friends.

6’2”, weighing in at 78 kg.

Why I'm doing this: Easy, I’m always running away from my responsibilities so why not run towards some for a change! But seriously, running has been a big part of my life and I am always up for a challenge, so why not challenge myself for the good of our younger folk.

Thank you for supporting this initiative!

  • Announcing the Level 2 ULTRA-marathon this weekend.

      13 May 2020

We want to thank you, our generous donors, for the amazing contributions you've all made! We're just shy of $1,000 and that is an amazing response. Thank you.

Level 2 is almost upon us, and with it travel restrictions will be lifted. To celebrate NZ's hard work over the past weeks we have decided to attempt a 55 km ULTRA-marathon.

This is ambitious and will take a huge amount of determination, concentration, and preparation. We already have friends pledging progressive bonus donations above 42 km for added encouragement so this is going to be fun! Incredibly painful and difficult, but fun!

Stay tuned for updates and runner profiles over the coming days,

    Brody, Nick, Dan, & friends

    6’4”, weighing in at 90kg

Why am I doing this: Running was a transformation in my life, taking me from a very unhealthy weight of 140kg barely able to run 100m to running marathons. Now I want to use my running to help transform others' lives who are not so fortunate in these troubling times.

Thank you for supporting this meaningful cause.
