Logan's Assistance Dog

$830 of $20,000 goal
Given by 20 generous donors in one year

Assistance Dogs NZ provide assistance dogs for many different types of disabilities. They provide medical help and give independence.

Waikato

It costs up to $48,000 to raise and train an Assistance Dog throughout its life. Recipients of ADNZ Assistance Dogs are required to help the Charity by raising money towards the costs associated with training an Assistance Dog. The Trust relies totally on community generosity, our fundraising goal is $20,000.

ADNZ supply dogs to people with a huge variety of illnesses or disabilities eg Diabetes, Autism and down-syndrome to name a few but any disability is considered.

Logan has just turned 5. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 3.5 years old. Logan has to constantly monitor his blood glucose levels Day and Night. If Logan's blood sugars drop too low it can become very serious very fast. Unfortunately Logan has no idea if his blood sugars are going low and we cant tell either, so an assistance dog would smell the change in Logan's saliva and alert so we could check and treat before it becomes an emergency situation. He cant just go outside and play there are things we have to do first and we need to be prepared 100% of the time. We take a kit bag with us everywhere. Logan is getting to the age where he is starting to want some independence but he can't just go to a friends house and play. Gary or I have to go with him because not many people know how to look after his diabetes. Logan started school last week and I spent the week in primary school. Logan has a teacher aide and all the staff the junior school have done some training.

An Assistance dog would give Logan a sense of independence and he would be safer. The dog can pick up changes in his levels through the smell of Logan's saliva. His dog would sleep in his room and help us keep an eye on Logan while he sleeps. Logan would be gaining an amazing dog that would help him medically but he would also get a best friend and allow him a bit more independence. The dog would not only alert us if he was low but it would also comfort him while he recovered.
