    The Epic Journey – Completion

What a ride! On the 10th and 11th March a group of 13 hardy cyclists and 5 support crew successfully completed the 2017 stage of the Epic Journey – the Map team bike ride from St Arnaud to Hanmer vis the Rainbow Road and the St James Cycleway. It was a great trip, some spectacular scenery, some challenging hills and exhilaratingly fast descents and all this mixed with a great camping food, wet campsites and a good dose of team comradery.

Below is a fairly detailed blow-by-blow account of the weekend – something to inspire those who will be joining us next year, plus a bit of a thank you to those who contributed to KidsCan and the event sponsors.

Our KidsCan Givealittle page raised a massive $4,627.47. An enormous and sincere Thankyou to all who contributed.

As for next year we are looking to get one step closer to completing the Epic Journey between the Christchurch and Wellington Offices. We will keep you all posted as our plans develop.

St Arnaud to Hanmer via the St James Cycleway – the 2017 MaP Kids Can Cycle Challenge

Day 1 – The Rainbow Road from St Arnaud to Lake Tennyson

On Friday the 10th March a group of 13 hardy cyclists and 5 support crew rose early and started the drive North from the Christchurch Office towards St Arnaud – the start point on the 2017 MaP cycle challenge. Ahead of us was two days and 160km of off road riding between St Arnaud, Lake Tennyson, Hanmer with a detour around the St James cycleway. We were all pretty excited.

With 75k ahead we would have liked to have been on the track early but this was never going to happen after the Twizel contingent of Squeak (Gordon Hamilton) and the Dark Horse (David Robbie) getting lost in the Christchurch one way system for what seemed like hours while looking for the non-existent Durham St entrance to the Christchurch office.

It wasn’t long along the route before the team split, with most mortals heading south towards our accommodation for the night while 4 hardy souls turned right onto the Rainbow Ski field Road. Why Retro Rich (Richard Griffiths), Agent Orange (Brett Horwell), Mystery (Chris Ewers) and Tu Good (Neil Sutherland) decided to add 800m of vertical climbing to a long day of cycling no one yet knows. It’s even more disturbing when Tu Good decided to climb another 200m to the top of the ski field – performance enhancing drugs probably should have been checked as he later caught up to the rest of the group and after a short break continued to make his way ahead of the crowd to the camp site.

It also wasn’t long before the groups Ninja (Li Ing Peh) had her first crash of the day while crossing a river. By the sounds she was not phased by the crash ‘she says she has crashed a few times before’. By the end it became clear that the Ninja was an expert at crashing – taking the major award for the trip for this, or was it for the ‘most punctures’ or the ‘most significant mechanical failure with her bikes gearing system disintegrating on route. All in all – the Ninja deserves to be recognised for her tenacity in completing the ride under these circumstances.

The scenery was just superb along the route – big valleys, clear rivers, native beech forest and big mountains were some of the highlights. The photos don’t really do justice for this place.

Any attempt for a game, such as frizbee at the midway point were kept short – with darkness, and the threat of rain approaching participants were keen to keep moving. Surprisingly no-one took up the challenge of a swim in the Wairau River – the weather was just a bit too cold for this sort of activity.

As darkness approached the first riders approached the camp for the night. Thankfully Satanic Santa (Nick Horswell) and Shazman (David Lea) had driven ahead in their big 4wd’s to set up the tents which allowed riders to change out of wet clothes while consuming a celebratory beer. A hot and hearty meal of spaghetti bolognaise was soon steaming away which was welcomed by all riders.

It wasn’t until about an hour after dark that the final riders arrived at Lake Tennyson - the remaining 3 riders who foolishly ventured up the Rainbow Ski field Road – Retro Rich, Agent Orange and Mystery – a big day at the office for them. Though games were suggested and drinks were happily being consumed the team very quickly all retreated to the warmth of the tents for a well-deserved rest.

    Day 2:

Waking at dawn to barbequed bacon and eggs was appreciated by all. Great work Bear Grylls (Ethan Lancaster) and Bart (Brent Wilson). The light drizzle was not so appreciated so when the team headed off with full bellies jackets and jerseys were on. About 3km down the road the team turned right onto the St James Cycleway where the group climbed up to the 1300m. Clothing layers were removed due to the physical excursion on the ascent but upon reaching Maling Pass it became clear that the weather had turned for the worse. A hard decision was then made by some of the team to decent back to the Rainbow Road then directly to Hanmer rather than descending into the unsupported Waiau River Valley section of the St James Cycle Trail.

The group that returned to the Rainbow Road still had 45km more to ride, they took turns battling a head wind back towards Hanmer – with Big Red (Sharon Rusbatch) and ReaBan (Caroline Rea) ensure the troops maintained a good speed and drafted efficiently. I’m impressed by the commitment to keep warm on route – using a small toilet shelter with a long drop loo as a place to keep warm). The Ninja cemented her position with crashes, punctures and mechanical failues.

The group that continued on down into the Waiau River Valley were greeted by clearing skys, great views, several swing bridges and excellent trails.

The riding was tough and long so it was confirmed that the choice for the group to split was definitely a good one. It was agreed that next time the group returns it should be in fine weather.

While the riders were out on track it wasn’t all work for the support crew. Bear Grylls proved his experience in back country driving by leading the other vehicles through some of the more rugged terrain which kept the drivers all entertained. He was successful in finding a ditch which gave him top honours for the driving team by needing to be towed.

The decent down the gravel road of Jacks Pass to Hanmer for all riders was both challenging and exhilarating. With the rain and spray off the road visibility was extremely poor so good work to all for making it down safe.

Being greeted at the Hanmer camp by The Ring In (Jane Whyte) and Shazman with hot drinks late Saturday afternoon was much appreciated, as were the hot pools and large hot meals that evening.

All in all, it was an excellent trip that we would recommend to anyone who wishes for a taste of the Canterbury outdoors. A huge thanks to our Support drivers Satanic Santa, Shazman, the Ring In, Bart and Bear Grylls – we couldn’t have done the trip without you, and your supportive attitudes and camp setup and breakdown made the trip even more pleasurable. A big thanks also to our sponsors and to KidsCan, who make this trip even more meaningful.

As you’ll be aware the fire on the port hills has caused grief and despair for the folks on the hill, which included some of our chums participating in the Epic Journey bike ride. Following the fire an emergency meeting of the riders committee was scheduled to discuss plans.

‘Retro Rich’ focused his 1000m gaze on the assembled group and promptly declared ‘leaving town just isn’t the right thing to do while the hills are burning’.

So what next? You may well ask, Answer - A new date Thursday 9th March is now officially the go.

The delayed start has opened up the opportunity for additional riders to join the group and ‘Page One ‘has jumped out of the fire (on the hills) into the proverbial frying pan. Page One brings with him more environmental credibility than a green greanie.

Retro Rich has reviewed the itinerary and concluded there isn’t enough pain involved (now that seats and shoes are optional). So, he’s added a couple of sub- zero lake swims into the mix. However he’s also added marshmallows to the evening menu – that’s his humanistic side coming to the fore (there must be an engagement survey imminent).

Bags are packed and we’re ready to go, and the chums bags vary in size from ‘RaeBan’ who has an extra, extra large rucksack that would give the proverbial donkey palpitations to ‘The Churtinator’ who has his 4 days’ worth of gear and rations wrapped in a handkerchief taped under his armpit.

All the training is complete, the riders are champing at the bit, the support crew are champing on the rider’s rations and with massive amounts of sunshine dialled in for the weekend all is in place for fun, frivolity and chapped legs.

Our KidsCan Givealittle page is standing at $3,400 which is fantastic so a big Thankyou to all who have contributed to date and a premature thankyou to those who are about to contribute over the next few days.

  • Epic Journey Part 5 - Day 2 St James Trail

      14 February 2017
    Main image

    DAY TWO:

    St James Trail

    Distance Climbing Estimated trail time

    80 km 1,500 m 8 – 9 hours

The St James Cycle Trail is a journey through some of New Zealand’s most spectacular and historic high country – a true mountain-biking experience incorporating 4WD trails, single track, steep ascents, descents, river crossings and maybe even a swim.. A ride you will never forget!

Riders will depart Lake Tennyson camp together and start the short climb over 4WD track to Maling Pass. From Maling Pass the trail descends steeply to the Waiau Valley.

Meandering along the valley floor the trail is relatively easy with the option to take in a swim at Lake Guyon, a short detour 1 km each way. Made famous from the infamous 2015 recce ride naked swim incident! (Clothing compulsory for the 2017 charity ride). From Lake Guyon the trail continues meandering along to the Saddle Spur Bridge.

Following the Saddle Spur Bridge the trail crosses the Saddle Spur to reach Pool Hut and on to the McArthur Bridge which leads onto Charlies Saddle. This section of the trail, Saddle Spur to Charlies Saddle, has the most challenging sections and is described as rocky and uneven with difficult climbs, tricky descents and step drop offs.

After Charlies Saddle the riders cross Edwards River. From here the trail follows a 4WD drive track up the Edwards Valley and is mostly easy with four river crossings up to Peters Pass and a flattish run down to the St James Homestead.

From the Homestead riders follow the Tophouse and Clarence Valley Roads over Jacks Pass, a short climb, then down to Hanmer Springs and camp for the night.

  • The Epic Journey Part 3

      1 February 2017

Time rolls on, and so do the riders as training and expectations build for MaP’s Epic Journey in support of Kidscan.

Initial concerns about fitness levels, skills, and general ability have been swept under the carpet to be used later in the post ride analysis, which will inevitably focus on allegations, recriminations, accusations and blame, all washed down with a couple of cold ones.

    In the meantime, an update on the riders;

‘Big Red’ rides to work and home every morning, while Dark Horse rides to work and home on alternate days mind you it is a 240k round trip for him.

‘Doc’ Martin is listening to electrical and structural engineering podcasts which have been digitally remastered from the 1950 original recordings, this will hopefully prepare her what will be a very intense time, riding with Tu Good and Double A Ron

‘RaeBan’ as well as riding she also charged with providing equipment that will make life easier during the ride, so far she has obtained, a fondu set, a flatpack self assembly straw shelter, a solar powered juicer and a set of cast iron saucepans..nice!

‘Tu Good’ being somewhat elite he still refuses to ride with the peloton, luckily this hasn’t caused any concern at all as no one in the group knows what a peloton is anyway

‘Dark Horse’ a quiet achiever he only ventures out of shadows and into the sunlight for a good cause, you may recall him from his hirsute activities during Movember

‘Ninja’ Still recovering from the physical and mental trauma of riding tandem with Retro Rich on the last big MaP ride and yet, she’s ready to do it all again, this time for the kids

‘Squeak’ The only rider without a nickname, he’s more excited than Gareth Morgan at a stray cat convention

‘The Churtinator The Churtinators adds yoga classes to his training regime, It’s no more Mr Nice Guy, The Churtinator is out to break somebody, anybody.

Thanks to those who have visited our givealittle page.

  • The Epic Journey Part 2

      25 January 2017

A couple of weeks ago an article on Wired outlined stage 1 in a series of bike rides, runs in support of KidsCan.

The journey begins on the w.e of 18th February with a bike and run from St Arnoud to Hanmer Springs, some 150k.

We now have a full complement of riders and support crew and they are for the most part a happy enough bunch of chums who are all looking forward to the ride and especially the fruit buns with lashings of cream and jam accompanied by pints of lemonade they will consume on the journey.

However the reality of the challenge has hit home, wishing and hoping has dissolved into gloom and sadness as it dawns on the riders that it may take more than good intentions to do this.

    Team Updates

‘Retro Rich’ He sulked for 2 days solid when he was informed no one would be joining him for the ‘no seat required challenge’ he eventually perked up when he realised this meant he would retain the ‘golden stem award’ for another year. Latest mantra from our leader is No pain – No fun.

Double A Ron’ Our safety officer for the event, he’s identified electricity as a fatal risk and is commited to zero electrocutions for the duration of the ride which seems reasonably aspirational

‘Two Dads’ threatened to ‘walk away’ when informed he wouldn’t be allowed to use an e-bike

‘Agent Orange’ our transport organiser has completed all the transport arrangements, which amounted to little more than asking a few people to share a vehicle, hardly a complex project, but still…

‘Mystery’ is on a final warning for unfurling his unfeasibly large shorts during training rides when the tailwinds exceed 15 knots

‘The Support Crew’ are meeting regularly and talking through their issues, sometimes they also discuss issues related to the ride

On the bright side only four weeks to go!

Thanks to those who have visited our givealittle page; if you haven’t been to the page yet here’s the link, jump on and support your favourite rider.

    Happy Days

    Neil Gregory

  • Epic Journey Part 1

      25 January 2017

As the Christchurch summer kicks in, one’s thoughts inevitably turn to outdoor activities. Some dream of the sound of leather on willow, others simply spoil a good walk by taking golf clubs with them. For the cyclists among us it’s time to shed their moleskins shorts and Drizabones and don their preferred lycra one piece ensemble, polish their collective stems, dab an oily rag over their moving bits, gird their loins and hit the road for this year’s MaP Charity Bike Ride.

The MaP team and their chums from across the business, are nothing if not an altruistic bunch of softies and if there’s an opportunity to help others, while enjoying themselves and being kind to the environment by parking up their collective vehicles for the weekend, then its game on.

Previous year’s bike rides by the team have raised some good coin for the RSA, St Johns, Guide Dogs, and Women’s Refuge.

This year we’re riding for KidsCan and we’ve swapped our collection buckets for a ‘givealittle’ page, so have a look and give a little (or more than a little if you can).

In case you’re wondering why it’s an Epic Journey It’s because this is just stage 1 of a series of rides/runs kayaks that are currently being planned for later in the year. The objective is to arrive at Queens Wharf at some future yet to be determined date, via a yet to be confirmed route, by a group of as yet un named volunteers. All we know is, it will be epic and it will hurt.
