At the same time, on the same day, all over the world, people are taking part in a truly unique event. A global run - running for those who can't. Raising awareness of spinal cord injuries which affect millions worldwide; & raising funds to find a cure.
Rise For Alex 31 March 2014
Wow, $1000, in just over a week. This is so surreal, and overwhelming. It has gone much further than I thought it would, with international donations and word spreading to people who have nothing to do with Karen or I. A massive thank you to those who have donated so far - it really means a lot to me, and to Karen, who is proving the very best administrator and treasurer about. Sadly, the issue of spinal cord injuries has been at the forefront of a community a lot of the donors are a part of - rugby league. Last week, Alex McKinnon of the Newcastle Knights suffered an awful injury in a tackle gone wrong - no one was at fault, it was a series of unfortunate events which lead to his injury. News is emerging tonight that he will likely never walk again. Many of you will know the Knights were my 'Pre 95' team, who I supported before the Warriors, and they still hold a special place in my heart, having met some great people from the Newcastle region, traveling there to watch both the Warriors and Kiwis play at Hunter Stadium. I even own and wear Knights merchandise (which does not go un-heckled!) I feel for Alex, his family and his team mates and now what WE'RE doing, you and I, all of us - together - has been taken to another level. Karen and I met through rugby league. I feel as a member of the community a responsibility to the game I love. Sadly, Alex is just beginning what will be a completely massive challenge, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. If running in the middle of the night is going to help him, help Karen and thousands of others get one step closer to running beside me - then bring it on. The very best care is great, but a cure would be better. Let's fund research, let's find a cure. #RiseForAlex Heather xx
