What a great day to ride yesterday. We started at Sheffield in extreme NW conditions; going 37 km/h felt like cheating with hardly any peddling! The wind dropped, and we had a few headwind battles on our way to Weedons School. The highlight of the first 75 km leg for the team was passing West Melton School and seeing all the ākonga and staff out cheering us on. Several of the team had a wee tear in their eye, including me!

Weedons School looked at us at lunch, made sure we could restock the fluid and freshened ourselves up. All the students cheered us as we left. We were about one hour ahead of time.

Some of our riders left, and we picked up a few more for the second leg.

The second leg went smoothly, and the bunch worked well together all day. There were a few more headwind sections in the second leg, but everything went smoothly overall. Springston School and Leeston made us feel like superstars as we passed them, with Leeston even doing a haka.

We stopped briefly at Challenge Leeston to refresh before proceeding to the last part, back to Tai Tapu.

Our safety support crew, which included Warwick and Kirsty (Tuffnell Drainage ), Jo (my very understanding wife), Mitch, Emma, and Sally (Selwyn Sports Trust), made us feel very protected as a group on some busy roads.

Thank you to all those who helped me hit my fundraising target.

The Tour of Selwyn was the most memorable event I have had for several years!

We’re beyond excited to announce that the The Tour of Selwyn - Ride for a Great Cause has received a generous $3,000 donation from our friends at Givealittle! 🎉

Givealittle has just reached an incredible milestone, helping Kiwis raise over $300 million for causes across New Zealand! To celebrate this achievement, they gave away $3,000 to three lucky charities. All we had to do to enter was have a donation on our page, and thanks to the amazing support of 60+ incredible donors who contributed to a rider on the Tour of Selwyn, we were in the draw! 🎉

We can hardly believe our luck, being selected as one of the winners! A huge thank you to Givealittle for this amazing opportunity. 🙏

This $3,000 will go directly into our Activator Programme, alongside the funds raised through the Tour. It will help us continue to support tamariki across Selwyn to access physical activity opportunities through our Activator Programme. 💪

We also want to send a BIG thank you to our donors! Without your support, the Tour would not be possible. Every single donation makes a difference, and we are so grateful to everyone who has contributed so far. 🌟

Thank you to each and every one of you! We couldn’t do this without you!

  • All the big training rides are done!

      3 November 2024

I had a great ride at the weekend from Springston to Purau and back. I felt really strong in the hills and enjoyed getting some climbing into my legs. The three spin classes a week have helped my strength and endurance.

This week will be quieter, with three spin sessions, three swims, and a couple of runs. I won't be doing the Leeston Cycling Club race the night before, as it may smash the legs a bit much!

I'm looking forward to the ride on Friday, although bunch riding always requires a lot of concentration, so it may be a long, tiring day! Early start to be at Sheffield Domain by 7:30 am.

$320 to go to get our school into the $1000 sports gear draw!

  • Nearly there!

      30 October 2024

Wow the time has gone fast! I am ready to get this ride done, my last three hour ride this weekend and then a couple gentle rides during the week. During this time I have done my first 120 km ride, and had four rides a week averaging 180 km a week. Certainly been going through the Sweet Cheeks Butt Butter. A bit gutted I am not going to hit my goal of $1000 and get a chance to win $1000 worth of sports gear for West melton School. Feel free to share this page to your friends to get some more cash for the Selwyn Sports Trust and the ākonga they support.

  • Win $1k Worth of Sports Equipment for Your School!

We are only 22 days away from the Inaugural Tour of Selwyn! This charity Bike Ride aims to raise funds to support the 7000+ tamariki involved in our Activator Programme!

We’ve already received great support from our Activator Programme community, and to show our appreciation, we will be donating $1,000 worth of sports equipment to the school of one lucky rider who raises over $1,000 in the Tour of Selwyn.

The lucky rider doesn’t need to be a student, teacher or parent at any particular school. They will choose a school to benefit from the prize if their name is drawn. However, if the rider is associated with an Activator Programme school, the choice will be an easy one!

There is still time to jump on your bike and join the Tour to support the tamariki of Selwyn! Follow the link below to join the Tour:

  • Getting the training done and staying clear of Magpies

      11 October 2024

Well, it has been a busy time getting the training done. Last Saturday, I had a great bike ride with the Antigua Boatshed crew. I biked from Springston through Lincoln, Taitapu over Gebbies Pass, out to Purau, and back again. Tomorrow, I am heading from Leeston to Hororata. Hopefully, no magpies are nesting!

I look forward to raising more cash and winning some sports gear for West Melton School.

Please share my ride with others so we can give the Selwyn Sports Trust a significant boost.

  • $750 Does Not Seem Enough!

      9 September 2024

The training is going well, and I am building up the cycling km. For all the work I am putting in, as I wanted a challenge of the 150 km ride, I also thought I could increase the fundraising challenge and go for $1000 for the Selwyn Sports Trust.
