    Kia ora tatou!

It's been a couple of months since I finished riding Tour Aotearoa. As you can see, the cycling gear has gradually made its way through the wash - bags, clothes, tent, rainwear. Today I replaced the last of the worn out parts on my bike, and it's ready for a ride during the coming long weekend. I'm also well and truly back to work, with my sleeves rolled up.

So too are the fine folks at the HELP Foundation. I caught up with them last month, with my whanau and some friends, to hear about their plans. Working together - you, me and HELP - we raised $10,000. HELP is using that to upgrade its child counselling facility at the Porirua Office. The Office is in a residential area and has a sleep-out attached. The funds will turn that into a really child-friendly space for counselling - the plans looked just amazing. It was so exciting to see the work we did together delivering a tangible outcome. And it was great to share some of the ride's more memorable experiences with friends at HELP. We shared a great evening (and an outstanding waiata that was just right).

Like others who did the ride, I'm still thinking hard about my time on the road. It's left an indelible imprint. So I'm also thinking about what comes next. That will include cycling. Please stay in touch via my Facebook page for updates as I work that through.

For now though, thanks so much for your support.

Until the next adventure - ka kite ano!

    Paul

  • Thank you so much!

    Kia ora koutou

It's been an amazing experience riding for Help Foundation. I've documented much of that at https://www.facebook.com/PaulsBikepacking/ so, if you haven't visited there, please do pop by for a look at how the trip went. It's chock full of photos, thoughts, and reflections from my time on the road. You were there with me in spirit - so the Facebook page provides a way for me to share as much as I can of that with you. I'm still writing pieces distilling the experience, so there will be further updates on that page yet.

Suffice it to say here that the 27 days spent riding 3000kms were a wonderful mixture of physical and mental challenge. They pushed me out of my comfort zone. They also delivered a sensory overload. I discovered places, people and things in Aotearoa New Zealand that were outside my usual experience, and reconnected with my sense of turangawaewae.

Working with the team at HELP was a big part of that experience. So too all of your generous support and assistance - it is hugely appreciated. As the Give A Little page draws to its close in a few minutes time, I'm excited to see that together we have raised $10,000 to support HELP in its work. That's an exceptional outcome. I am extremely grateful to you for this, and know the folk at HELP feel the same way.

Now, to plan the next adventure...suggestions welcomed.

    Nga mihi nui koutou!

    Paul

  • One week to go...

      14 February 2016

I've been preparing as best I can for the start of the big ride, one week from now, at Cape Reinga. I have a complete gear list, and it pretty well all fits into my bike bags... I've dropped around 5kg since January, which means pedalling is easier. And the pre-departure nerves are kicking in, which is a good sign. Woohoo!
