Romy and Ben's Malawi Project

  • The pads are distributed!

With much help from Konjera the hospital administrator at St Peter's Hospital, we have distributed period packs to 177 grateful girls, ranging from 12-14 years old, at 3 different schools on Likoma Island - Form 1s at Chipyela Community Day Secondary School and Bishop Biggers Secondary School, and Standard 8s at St Peter's Primary. Each pack contains 5 reusable pads, 3 pairs of underwear, body soap and laundry soap. Before distributing, we gave a talk to the girls about women's health, puberty, self defence, how to use the packs, hand hygiene and more. Each group of girls was so attentive and welcoming, and said they were very grateful for the packs - saying they will make a tangible difference for them. We have a few packs remaining that the hospital will distribute with the next time this project is done by a visiting New Zealand elective student because they are too few to provide for a whole year group. This project couldn't have been possible without each of your donations so we thank you again!

We have added several more photos to the main Give A Little Page for your interest :) scroll down to the gallery to view.

We have just collected the last of the reusable pads from the tailor. Trina and her team are experts in pad making - they have made 1000 pads for us (967 from our raised funds, 33 donated ones to top us up)! 200 kits, one for each girl, will have 5 pads each.

With your help, we have raised enough money to provide packs of reusable period products for high school girls (see pictures) AND 50 mosquito nets for the local hospital on Likoma Island. This is very exciting - thank you so much to everyone who contributed.

Ben is leaving for Malawi in 20 days (!) and Romy will follow a few weeks after.

We can't wait to update you all about the Likoma project, and the small but important difference your donations will make.

    Watch this space! :)

  • Mosquito nets

      4 May 2024

Thanks to donors' generosity, we have been able to extend our fundraising goal to cover the provision of mosquito nets on Likoma in addition to our period poverty project! Our new goal is $4000.

  • Yay!

      2 May 2024

We've reached our $2000 goal which means we will be able to provide reusable period products for two high school year groups. Amazing! Thank you so much to all the donors!!! You have made our job easy and your generous contributions will make a tangible difference to girls' lives.

We will keep the page open for more donations for now - with more money we can do more, whether that is providing more period products on the island or providing mosquito nets for a separate project to help prevent malaria.

    We will update soon.
