Jess' run for Epilepsy Awareness

  • Marathon Finish

      23 November 2014

I am a Marathon runner! I never thought this day would come. Yesterday I completed my first Marathon in Queenstown. It was the first International Qtown Marathon too. I was so nervous on Friday night I don't even remember sleeping as my dreams became nightmares of the race. It was an early start at about 5:15am where I raced out of bed and got ready. I felt sick but forced myself to eat. I then headed down to catch the shuttle to the start line. When we arrived it was only 6:45am so had an hour and a half to wait in cold non-stop rain. There was no shelter but luckily I had my raincoat and thermals on although I was shaking from the cold and nerves which didn't help things. Next minute I was wanting the start to hurry so I could get warmed. I was really excited to get running as 'everyone' seemed to tell me how easy I would find the first half and I would glide through so being ambitious set my goal of 4 hours to complete.... unfortunately I did not find this and had stitch the first 10km which I never get, along with unexpected hills, slushy mud, rain and wind and mental emotions from lack of support as the trails didn't provide good access for supporters. However I managed to cross halfway at 2hours which I was pretty happy with and set a realistic goal in finishing under 4:30min. I was so excited to see my first supporters around 23km I couldn't stop grinning and became determined once more. After hitting about 28km my hopes dropped again as we came to an even steeper hill which seemed to never end (I really had wished the weather was better so I could see the beautiful scenery) however I battled with my emotions and trudged along towards the last 10km. At 35km it was the toughest mentally.... I had run so far but 7 1/2 km seemed so far at the pace I was going I still had another 50min worth of running. I am not quite sure how I managed to keep going but all I thought of was what a great thing I was doing supporting Epilepsy NZ and knew how far I had come. Within the last 5km I was on an ultimate high although the weather suggested otherwise with torrential horizontal rain and strong head winds I was so happy to be soooo soo close. As I ran up the last hill I sprinted my heart out (actually probably going no faster than a walker) and down the dodgy finishers ramp to the finish. I was so overwhelmed and so proud of my achievement and seeing my supporters it was rather an emotional affair. I also was stoked with my time of 4h:26min for such a tough course :D. I completely forgot how cold I was and sore and relished in the moment before going home to a luxurious hot bath. I am so thankful for all my supporters who have helped me raise so so much money for an amazing cause. I am so appreciative and excited about all the hardwork this goal has been. Watch this space :)

  • Over $1,000

      9 November 2014

I am so incredibly excited about how much money has been raised for Epilepsy NZ, it is so incredible. It definately helps increase my motivation and determination to do well. This last week my body has felt like I have been constantly run over by a bus. I also have been eating like a horse and nothing seems to cure my hunger!!! Any tips? It was my last building week before I start to taper and boy am I glad it is over..... Monday: 1.25km swim Tuesday: 75min speed run with a few hills Wednesday: Hill run 100min which I had to walk the last 10 as my feet told me otherwise. Thursday and Friday I rested Saturday: I ran for 2 1/2 hours and felt awesome. Sunday: I am off for my first ocean swim this morning which I am very excited about.

      3 November 2014

Wahoo you are all so amazing having reached my goal and soaring way above it..... so so appreciative right now. So this last week my knee had been playing up and turned out to be a minor calf strain... I was very hesitant to complete my longest run yet on Saturday but knew it would be my last opportunity to complete it before the race. So here is what I managed.... Monday: 30min easy run Tuesday: 1.25km Swim Wednesday: 1hr 30min run Thursday: Rest Friday: Easy Walk Saturday: 3 1/2 hour run (Hardest physical activity mentally of my life) I am hoping the marathon will be a lot more positive than my last run :) Ah well less than 3 weeks left of training runs and I cannot wait.

  • $100 to go!

      26 October 2014

The time is nearing to the big race. My body has been trying to tell me it is tired, sore and to STOP running where as my mind is determined not to give up. It's a constant battle. Four weeks to go and I am so close to my goal which I am soooo happy and excited for. This week was a recovery week although it felt just as hard as a building week haha. Monday I swam 1.25k which felt amazing on my body. Tuesday was 60mins speed training. Wednesday 1hr 30 at 5:44km pace which really was hard on my body. Thursday a slow 3min run. Saturday I was meant to run 1hr 30 but my body told me different at 1hr 7min I knew it wouldn't be pretty if I continued. This coming week is the hardest and longest training week with my longest run on my birthday... Watch this space my amazing supporters :)

  • 5 Weeks to go

      18 October 2014

Wow time is sneaking up on me. This week has been my hardest yet. Not physically like you would assume but mentally. Having an intensive building week of fitness and not being able to complete any of the sessions would not have been something I would have ever thought of. Remember I have never been a 'runner' until this year. So any fitness I lose I find quite difficult to get back as quickly. On Monday and Tuesday I couldn't even walk.I truly was frustrated but I knew that if I was wanting to continue training, I had to be patient and have my body fully recover before getting back to it. I am even more motivated to do so much better now as my body feels well rested and fingers crossed my legs healed too. Yay I am so excited I am less than $200 closer to my goal. Thank you for supporting me :)

  • Over 1/2 way to reach goal

      7 September 2014

Wow absolutely appreciative of all my donations received from my close friends. I have already reached over half my goal I am aiming to raise for. Truly amazed. Of course every donation has given me so much more motivation for my training especially reading this article on an inspiring young triathlete from NZ http://www.nzherald.co.nz/health/news/article.cfm?c_id=204&objectid=11316762 whom definitely shows courage and determination. So an update this weeks training involved: Monday- Rest Tuesday- 37min run (Hills) Wednesday- 61min run (More Hills) Thursday- rest Friday- Rest Saturday- 73 min run (Even more Hills) Sunday (24 min easy run) This was a building week and boy was it tough with those hills, luckily I had 2 cute dogs to make it more adventurous. 11 Weeks to go :)

  • Reached 1/3 of Goal!

      31 August 2014

Wow after only a week of starting my page I have already raised 1/3 of my goal to raise at least $800. That is because of all you kind people. I have now completed my 3rd week of training. So in light of your generosity this morning I tried procrastinating my long run as Auckland as been having typical rainy, windy weather. However I braved the horrible weather and enjoyed running out West through the countryside. Once I got into the run I forgot about the weather and battled through the hills. This weeks training consisted of 4 runs: 55mins, 33mins, 22mins and then 66mins. This was a recovery week. 12 weeks to go :)
