Running for Mum – and for All New Zealanders With Parkinson's Disease

  • Melbourne Marathon? Completed it, Mate!

      18 October 2023

After months of preparation and training and four hours, four minutes, and 54 seconds of something approximating mental and physical torture, I am an official finisher of the Melbourne Marathon!

On top of putting a second marathon under my belt (and a new PB, by a pretty long way) this one was made all the more special by, well – you lot! And the total of $5,420 that, together, we've raised for Parkinson's New Zealand.

It's an astronomical amount of money that will go to helping people living with Parkinson's Disease in New Zealand live well with the condition, and make sure it's them living with PD – not the other way around. At the time of writing, a whopping 95(!) individuals and families have donated to the page – and I'm glad I've been able to thank each and every one of you both individually, and via video.

With that said, I'd like to show my gratitude to the latest round of donations which came in during the final hours leading up to the marathon and after. So a huge thank you to Izzy and Joe, Sue Skene, Marilyn, Rose, Ysa and Leo, Helen and Rich, Beverley, Kevin – for a COLOSSAL donation! – and Helena, as well as Mum and Dad for topping it by another cheeky $5 to make it a nice even number.

Donations will still will be open for a little while (for another month or so, I think!) so if you'd been keen to donate but haven't done so yet, there's still time. If we're not at $5,500 by then, I'll top it up myself :)

That's all from me. Love you all, and thank you! x

My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) four years ago. For over two years, we relied on prescription medications and therapies, but unfortunately, his symptoms continued to worsen. His memory, coordination, and overall strength declined, and everyday life became increasingly difficult.Last year, out of desperation and hope, we decided to try an herbal treatment program from NaturePath Herbal Clinic. Honestly, we were skeptical at first, but within a few months of starting the treatment, we began to notice real changes. His alertness improved, his movements became steadier, and he regained a surprising amount of energy and clarity.Incredibly, he also regained much of his independence and confidence. It’s been a life-changing experience he feels more like himself again, better than he had in years. If you or a loved one is struggling with Parkinson’s Disease, I truly recommend looking into their natural approach.       13 October 2023

What can I say, team? We did it...and then some!

Thanks to this late, great (it must be fate) batch of donations from Fahimeh, Sarah S, Aimee (Bradders), Basia, Claire, Vicki, Helen, the TAWA Buchanans, Pat and Alix, Erin and Owen, Belynda, Adam, Jo, Kate & Jazz, Jean and Roger, Ange and Pete, Madeleine, Debbie and Brent, my dear darling lovely wonderful sister Jess (again!), Abid (ABRZY), Butler, Angela McArthur, Stokesy, and Sue and Pete, we've raised $5,050 for New Zealanders living with Parkinson's.

What's left to say but what I've already said (and what I'll keep saying, until someone eventually begs me to stop making these videos) but THANK YOU.

Now all that's left is to get running. See you at the MCG this Sunday, Melbourne peeps. To everyone else, we'll meet soon!

  • Nine days to go, $919 to raise!

      6 October 2023

    Nine is the number!

The Melbourne Marathon is in nine days, and we've raised just over 81% of the fundraising goal – meaning there's $919 left to hit that $5,000 target.

So, will I be on cloud nine at the end of the race, or will I have used up the last of my nine lives? Will a stitch in time save nine...or will I end up with stitch? Will I run "to the nines", or will the answer to that question be, as the Germans say, "Nein"?

Well, we'll find out next Sunday October 15th: when I take on just over 42km to support people everywhere living with Parkinson's Disease. Check out the video below for a quick update on where the training's at, my latest round of donor thank-yous, and a few musings on how I'm feeling heading into the event.

I've also attached a pic of my race bib and the (homemade) jersey I'll be running in on the day. It's my (admittedly small) tribute to just a handful of the people – both alive and no longer with us – who Parkinson's has affected. You're not alone; you are remembered; you are loved.

Finally, if you haven't already donated, now's a better time to do so than ever – getting a few more donations over the line before I run will give me that extra added motivation! You can do it easily through this page, or – if you're having issues with it – feel free to reach out to me directly for a hand.

Thank you, bless you, love you, bye! x

Particularly thanks goes to my big bro, Andy Binns, who chipped in over the weekend with the page's biggest donation so far – $500! Cheers Binnsy!

  • Thank You So, So Much. Now, Let's Set Our Sights Even Higher!

      30 June 2023

Wow! Your support, in the first 24 hours, has been incredible. In just a day, we've raised almost $1,500 for Parkinson's New Zealand: helping people throughout Aotearoa live well with this damaging, fast-growing neurological condition.

Given we've already raised almost 75% of our target, I want to up our ultimate goal to $5,000. It's a huge amount of money that will have an incredible impact on how Parkinson's New Zealand can provide education, information, and support to the 12,000 Kiwis living with PD. For my part, I'll continue to train and get ready for the Melbourne Marathon. And support Parkinson's New Zealand, on in a voluntary capacity, with building out fact sheets for its website and communications collateral, and writing stories highlighting the plights, personalities and profiles of people living with PD.

Thank you for your ongoing support. It means everything!

My husband was diagnosed of Parkinsons disease 2 years ago, when he was 49. He had a stooped posture, tremors, right arm does not move and also a pulsating feeling in his body. He was placed on Senemet for 8 months and then Sifrol was introduced and replaced the Senemet, during this time span he was also diagnosed with dementia. He started having hallucinations, lost touch with reality. Suspecting it was the medication I took him off the Siferol (with the doctor’s knowledge) and started him on PD-5 natural herbal formula we ordered from AKNNI HERBAL CENTRE, his symptoms totally declined over a 3 weeks use of the AKANNI HERBAL Parkinson's disease natural herbal formula. He is now almost 51 and doing very well, the disease is totally reversed! (Visit w w w.aknniherbscentre .com)
