I am running the Auckland Half Marathon to raise money for Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC)
Auckland
I moved with my wife and cat to New Zealand in December 2017. I approached the Takapuna Rotary Club so that I could meet like-minded people and engage with my community. The experience has been brilliant. I have met some incredible people and listened to some fascinating stories.
On 28 October, I will run the Auckland Half Marathon and raise money for the Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC). ROMAC's work is best summed up by their website:
“To provide within Australia and New Zealand, medical treatment for children 15 years and under, who are from developing countries, for life saving and/or dignity restoring surgery not available to them in their own country”
ROMAC is a humanitarian program that provides urgent, life changing medical treatment to children who need it the most. ROMAC has changed the lives of more than 300 children from 20 countries, since 1988.
Eminent Australian and New Zealand surgeons and other specialists donate their time for the required surgeries. During their recovery after surgery, local families host the children, and a parent accompanying them.
I am keen to raise money for an organisation that has a big impact at an international level but is a true Kiwi success story. The work done by ROMAC tangibly changes the lives of people who otherwise would not have access to the medical procedures.
I hope that my story inspires people to become Rotarians (you should check out Takapuna Rotary's Facebook page if you are interested) and also inspires you to make a donation of whatever you can spare to a very worthwhile cause.
Thank you all for your support. See you at the finish line!
I am a member of Takapuna Rotary Club and I am raising money for ROMAC to support the incredible work they do.
Devonport 15k 2 October 2018
In preparation for the half marathon on 28 October, I ran the Devonport 15k on Sunday 30 September.
Daylight savings meant it felt like a very early start but I hopped on the bus and headed down the Devonport.
The conditions were great; clear blue sky and only a hint of a breeze.
The course was steady until the loop around Mount Head before the additional 5k took on some rolling hills.
I finished in 1:40 which was a little slower than I hoped for but sore knees slowed me down in the last 6km.
One more long training run to go before tapering off to the big day!
