Race Completed
19 October 2017Well I finished the race – completing the 100km’s in 17:12, starting at 5.30am and finishing just
after 10:30pm in what was a gruelling and brutal course.
For the doubters you can find the official results at https://sites.google.com/site/gow100s/2017-results
The amount of elevation in over 40% of the course made it very tough and the last 20km
were particularly challenging mentally. The highlights for me were running with a 62 year
old guy for an hour in one of the toughest parts of the course, hearing about how he had
just run a 100k ultra 3 weeks earlier and does about 6 per year was truly humbling and
inspiring. Also, it was so great that he stayed with me and kept me motivated for over
an hour when he could have just run on ahead. Also, coming down a step downhill towards
Joanna Beach and seeing all the runners spread out over the 5km’s of beach run with the
amazing surf was a great sight. Not so fun were the wet feet causing the severe blistering,
the loss of 8 out of 10 of my toenails and the bats flying at my face over the last 2.5 hours
running in the dark with the head torch.
Thanks so much to those who have already donated money to my chosen charity – it is much
appreciated.
