Chocolate-free for a month and five days to raise money for okura. It always seems impossible, until it’s done. – Nelson Mandela

20 Km North the CBD, Okura Estuary, with its marine life, nesting endangered birds, and stunning wilderness feel, is a true jewel in Auckland’s crown, a legacy for the future. But developers have now gone to Court, asking to be allowed to jam 1000 houses in.
What is at stake:
The Okura Estuary at the northern end of Auckland’s North Shore is part of the Long Bay Okura marine Reserve. It is bordered by the Long Bay regional Park, and Okura Bush Reserve (DOC). It provides a healthy environment for abundant marine life. Dolphins and whales have been seen playing in the waters and it is a feeding ground for migratory birds such as the Godwits, while endangered New Zealand dotterels and varied oystercatchers breed here. Community Groups have been protecting the Estuary for decades, but now this natural haven has come under threat again.
In a momentous decision last month, Auckland councillors voted to only allow low density rural development of 4 ha blocks, consolidating the earlier determinations of Council, Local Board and two Environment Court decisions.
Unfortunately, developers have appealed and want to be given the go ahead instead for urbanisation, jamming in 1000 houses instead, which would spell
doom the Estuary wildlife, through sedimentation, pollution and other impacts.
Long Bay Okura Great Parks will stand up for Okura, once again, in Court and needs to urgently
raise funds for this.

This is where I grew up. It was messy, it was muddy, it was amazing. It seems outrageous and over the top to want to build to such a high density is this rich and natural location.
I want to preserve the green for my kids and the generation that follows us. So I have commited to a month and 5 days chocolate -free. So far so good ...
