A decades-old goal, a bike, and the length of New Zealand — raising awareness for Parkinson’s one kilometre at a time.
Whitianga, Waikato
When Graeme was 14, he set off to walk the length of New Zealand. He didn’t get very far.
He met a girl at a caravan park, stayed for a couple of weeks, ran out of money and food, called his parents — and that was the end of that dream.
Fast forward a few decades.
Now in his 60s, living with Parkinson’s, he’s heading back to finish what he started — this time on a bike — riding the length of New Zealand with his 73-year-old mate Paddy, starting from the lighthouse at the top of the country on 13 February.
What began as a personal, unfinished goal has grown into an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s — a condition that affects many people and one he lives with every day.
As Graeme says, what doesn’t break you makes you stronger. This one hasn’t broken him yet.
If you’d like to support Parkinson’s research and awareness, or simply help two old blokes chasing an old goal, any donation is hugely appreciated. Donations will be split between Cure Parkinsons New Zealand and Parkinsons New Zealand
Feel free to follow along as they make their way down the country — and hopefully see a bit of New Zealand properly along the way.
Thanks for the support. 🚴♂️
