Skydiving for pediatric neurology

  • Update for 06/04/2013

      6 April 2013

All that excitement leading up to the big day, geared up and ready to do the dreaded jump to be told that it had to be postponed. I really wanted to have it done and over with but at the safe time I'd rather do this mental jump as safely as possible. Dubai was it with a sandstorm and high winds today so there was nothing we could really do. We are back on the 10th april 1am UAE time, 7pm NZ time. Let's hope the money keeps coming in for pediatric neurology :).... Fingers crossed all goes well next week and I'll get to post a few photos and videos of the jump!

3 hours to go and I am wondering if I should have a stiff drink instead of my usual nespresso. Should have I chosen a half marathon perhaps? LOL A friend of mine said he'd donate 500 dirhams (162 dollars) if I survive, I better make sure I do then... I love his sense of humour! Wish me luck and photos coming shorlty, luckily the predicted standstorm is not here yet! A big heartfelt thank you for your support and kindness, donations will continue to be open for a few days, let's hope the sum continues to grow! Wish me luck, Alba

2 sleeps to go and my legs feel like Jelly already! I am so close to that 2000 dollar target and I am truly hoping to get there. I would like to sincerely thank everybody that has made a donation towards the cause, this means so much to me! As you all know the money being raised is going towards to help children with neurological conditions and their families. More precisely the BLCT has set out to purchase a wireless Ambulatory EEG System. This piece of equipment will enable children who have to endure a whole week of constant monitoring to be able to move around and go to the playroom. In her 4 year life Brydie had this long week test taken 3 times. She had lots of leads glued to her head then the leads were hard wired into a box that was plugged into the wall. For 5 days she was unable to leave the room and neither was her mother as Brydie had to always have someone in the room with her. This system costs $32,000 and the BLCT has already raised a whopping $25,000. Everything I manage to raise will hopefully speed up reaching the needed target and make the whole hospital experience much easier and a lot less traumatic for a child. Thank you for reading this update and for supporting the Brydie Lauder Charitable Trust, Alba

  • Why am I jumping off a plane?

      21 February 2013

On Saturday 5th April at 10am I will jump off a plane and free fall until the parachutes opens. I am not your typical thrill seeker and the idea does not fill my heart with joy but I have committed to conquer my fears for the charity closest to my heart. I am fundraising for the Brydie Lauder Charitable trust which supports pediatric neurology for the children of New Zealand. These beautiful kids face continuous treatments and require together with their families specialist care and support. I live in Dubai and decided I wanted to help raise funds for this charity even if from a distance. The jump will take place on this side of the world to support a kiwi cause that is truly important to me and my family. The charity was founded by my sister-in-law following on from the devastating loss of beautiful Brydie last year. Brydie died at the age of 4 and was a truly incredible and inspirational little girl. She was my niece and and the most beautiful and funny flower girl at our wedding day in Italy. She faced some many challenges and difficult times in her life and yet always carried the biggest smile. Children with severe neurological disability frequently require levels of care much greater than most. The underlying disorders can have an impact upon other body systems such as breathing, feeding (hence a number require feeding tubes), vision, hearing, sleep and behaviour. This results in a significant burden of responsibility for care predominantly to parents/caregivers, and the impact of this can result in considerable financial and social hardship. The development of the Brydie Lauder Charitable Trust will enable valuable resources to become available for these neurology children and their families/caregivers. The Trust aims to support the pediatric neurology service as it strives to continue the aim of providing an optimal level of quality expert treatment and health care options available to all children within the service.
