Speedy Spike runs 42km for the sea

Last Friday, I accomplished my running goal - completing my first marathon (42.2km) before I turned 10. A wild southerly wind made it unsafe to run along Wellington's South Coast. So, Mum and I quickly came up with plan B, 105.5 laps of the 400m athletics track at Newtown Park.

A number of our friends and neighbours came along to support me, including my very first running mentor from Wellington Scottish Athletics Club, and Whaea Julie representing my school. I was really happy to have everyone's company as lap after lap after lap got pretty boring!

After 5 hours of lapping, I was finished - what a relief! I was presented with a small box, decorated with a hand drawn mandala. Inside was a recycled glass pendant inscribed with 42.2km. A very special momentum organised by some very thoughtful friends.

The next morning, I woke up as a ten year old, and found this article on Stuff - https://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/wellington/128159816/nineyearold-boy-runs-marathon-raises-more-than-2600-for-coastline-cleanup-charity

Thank YOU all for helping me exceed my second goal. Together we've raised over $3,300 for Sustainable Coastlines. I'm sure they will be very grateful to receive these funds after my page closes tonight. Mum, Dad and I are feeling really proud, and so appreciative of your support. Until next time, mā te wā.

Would you run a marathon in under 4hrs for a LEGO set? This was the challenge laid down by our neighbour on Sunday. Joining us during our ‘course’ recce, she was so impressed with #SpeedySpike ’s composure, that she dangled this carrot, mid-stride. Hope Spike's Dad has been practising his F1 Pitstop crewing 😉

For anyone along the Wellington South Coast on Friday 25 March, the 42km for the Sea ‘course’ will consist of 4x a 10.55km out-and-back from the Owhiro Bay Beach carpark to this pictured 5.3km turnaround at Lyall Bay, starting at 1:30pm. Please feel free to come join us for a few ks, or simply wave and cheer loudly if you see us out there.

10 days out, Speedy Spike is now less than $400 from his fundraising goal. So, if you know anyone that may like to support Sustainable Coastlines - please share this campaign. Many thanks.

  • Peak Run - lighthouses, a shipwreck and reflection

Speedy Spike ticked off his peak-run last weekend. 32K in the sun with Mum, and Dad on wheels. Three lighthouses and a shipwreck provided entertainment. At times the heat and flat terrain felt relentless. It was one step at a time, reflecting upon the privilege of being out there. Any struggles were forgotten in the final 4km with Spike running his fastest kilometers, and true to form he outsprinted Mum to the awaiting picnic-table.

  • Keeping it FUN with cross-training

On Saturday, Speedy Spike conquered Mt Kahuranaki - 20km / +800m vertical on his mountain bike at Triple Peaks, Hawkes Bay. Special shout out to all the friendly folk that offered encouragement on the challenging course, and later donated to this cause. It's people like YOU that help make reaching his goals possible.

Spike's training week typically consists of three runs, an evening refereeing and playing Floorball, another at a parkour class, and whenever possible, commuting on his scooter or bike (to school and other destinations within a 5-10km radius). Mixing up his movement ensures full body strength and balance, mitigates overuse injuries, and prevents boredom sneaking in. Keeping it FUN for running longevity!

Please share Speedy Spike's campaign if you can. The more people it reaches, the more potential for our coastlines to benefit.

Within three days of launching, it's become apparent that Speedy Spike has sold himself short on his fundraising goal. Thanks to just 16 generous donors, he's raised almost $500 for Sustainable Coastlines, already! So, we're upping the ante.

If you can, please share this campaign far-and-wide. The more people it reaches, the more potential for our coastlines to benefit.
