Spinning my capable body for Sarcoma

Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty

July is Sarcoma Awareness month and I am raising funds for the Sarcoma Foundation NZ by 'Spinning for Sarcoma'.

Sarcoma has impacted our whānau with our 19 year old son being dignaosed with Maligant intra-articular synvovial sarcoma in late October 2025. This was after a frustrating journey and a misdiagnosis in early 2025. After seeking a 2nd opinion and further surgery our worst fears turned into a reality we never envisaged for our son..

Exactly 19 days after our first visit to the Sarcoma Services in Auckland Brodie underwent a extra-articular resection with distal femoral replacement. This was a major surgery resulting in removal of his left knee, paritial removal of his femur, muscle and soft tissue...

Brodie was a talented rugby league and rugby player, his dream of taking this talent further was ripped away from him as he will never play the sports he was so passionate about..

Sarcoma Foundation NZ and the North Island Sarcoma team have been pivotal in Brodie's journey and recovery.

Brodie's physical recovery has been slow and I thought what better way to show my support by jumping on a bike everyday for July and spinning my capable legs for an amazing cause..

My main message through this journey has been ' if in your gut something is not right don't be afraid to be your loved ones advocate. Get a 2nd opinion'... Brodie is very lucky we did and not just take the advice of the first surgeon to ' just get on with it'.

355km spun in 20 days...  21 July 2026

Kia Ora koutou,

I cant thank you all enough for your koha to the Sarcoma Foundation, I have been spinning the bike everyday now for 20 days... my goal is 500km in 31 days ans so far I have spun 355km...

Why 500km you might wonder, each trip we have taken to Auckland is a round trip of just under 500km, we have done many many trips to Auckland.. So what better way to set a goal than spinning my legs the length of a round trip..
