Support Youth Nelson after floods

  • Ngā mihi nunui ki a koutou.

      3 September 2025

Ngā mihi nunui ki a koutou.

Your generous donations towards the flood relief of Rangatahi o Whakatū / Youth Nelson have been AMAZING!

So often our young people in the Alternative Education space have the impression that they are second class citizens or of little worth, and this is often reinforced by the poor quality of resources and learning spaces they inhabit.

Your attention, generosity and kind words have contributed to them feel valued, safe and SEEN by their community across the motu in a positive way.

    We can't thank you enough.

These are some thank you images created by some of our rangatahi. We are so appreciative of the support and awhi that has been offered by the community in many different ways.

Over the weekend, we moved into another interim space where we will be based until we are able to return to our normal building in mid-August. We will not have to set up at the start of each day (hurray!) which is great news for our team.

There's still a lot going on, with our normal mahi of supporting our rangatahi, alongside managing the repairs at the old site - but we will get there!

  • Moving forward

This week, we found out that we will definitely be out of our premises until late August. Nelson Council has already stripped out the insides of the building to allow it to dry out, and will carry out the remainder of the property remediation works.

In the meantime we’ve been working out of a local church hall, which has required us to pack in and out every day. Thankfully it looks like we’re very close to finding somewhere that we will be able to base ourselves until August. Rangatahi and staff are managing well despite the upheaval, but we’re looking forward to being more settled for the immediate future!

We’re really grateful for the awhi shown by so many, including Nelson Youth Council, the Dugdale Charitable Trust, Nelson Action Centre, and everyone who has shared and donated to our Givealittle page. Nga mihi!

  • Update May 29

It's definitely going to be a long road to walk together back to a fully functional whare! We’re already running on empty with the most vulnerable youth, and this will add to the challenge.

Massive thanks to everyone who has reached out in support since the devastation of Monday's flood offering practical help. That will be needed in the coming weeks. For now, if you feel comfortable supporting us in this way it would be amazing.

Ki te kotahi te kākaho, ka whati; ki te kāpuia, e kore e whati.

When we stand alone we are vulnerable, but together we are unbreakable.
