Swimming with Sharks: Crossing Foveaux and completing the NZ Open Water Triple Crown for Kenzie's Gift
Nationwide
In March, we two mothers of 4 and on the other side of a half century will attempt to swim from Stewart Island to Bluff wearing only a swimsuit. In doing so we will face our fears, swimming in Great White Shark territory and being challenged by the cold and tough conditions in Foveaux Strait.
Crossing Foveaux will also mean both of us will complete the NZ Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. The Triple Crown consists of Cook Strait (circa 25km), length of Lake Taupo (40.2km) and Foveaux Strait (28.6km). Only 7 people in the world have completed the Triple Crown and Susan and Grainne are attempting to be 8 and 9.
We are raising funds for 'Kenzie's Gift'. This charity supports the mental health of tamariki (children), matatahi (young people) and families affected by serious illness or bereavement.
Every dollar raised goes towards achieving the vision: to ensure no Kiwi kids face serious illness or grief alone. This wrap-around mental health support includes 1-on-1 therapy and expert resources.
See www.kenziesgift.com for further information.
We both made it across Foveaux! 11 March 2022
Hi Everyone - Thanks for all the support. We had to dig deep as it was a tough swim but the great cause and all the support kept us going. The conditions started well, swimming into a gorgeous sunrise and we both made good progress for the first five hours. Then fog set in, the tide was running in some strange way our local boat pilots hadnt experienced (and not in our favour), the swell and chop increased. About four hours before we finished the fog lifted as did our hearts as we saw land! However the tide was still against us and we had to battle hard. However some dolphins came to swim with Grainne and Susan had a guardian albatross who kept checking in on her. Susan landed first having spent just under 12 hours in the water and Grainne about 30 minutes later.
We are now recovering and enjoying all the wonderful congrats messages and so grateful for all the generous support for the cause. Thanks heaps from the Triple Crown Twins Susan and Grainne
